Subscription only?

Great new template! I'm fairly incompetent at template syntax, but have made a slight tweak. Should it have a subscription only note, as Template:ODNBweb has? Dsp13 (talk) 02:01, 7 January 2013 (UTC)

Website overhaul, December 2017

Hasn't broken this templates links (they redirect), but we could choose to implement either their new urls e.g. https://www.ukwhoswho.com/view/10.1093/ww/9780199540884.001.0001/ww-9780199540884-e-282438 or DOI links e.g. https://doi.org/10.1093/ww/9780199540884.013.282438 DBD 18:04, 6 December 2017 (UTC)

Hello @DBD: I've added digital object identifiers as a parameter to this template, although sadly, many of these new DOIs appear to be broken. While your example above (doi:10.1093/ww/9780199540884.013.282438) works, many do not. As of 13 December 2017 for example, Keith Bevens entry at:

http://www.ukwhoswho.com/view/10.1093/ww/9780199540884.001.0001/ww-9780199540884-e-289275 uses a broken doi:10.1093/ww/9780199540884.013.289275

I've notified CrossRef of a handful of these via http://www.crossref.org/DOIComplaint, but there appear to be many more.

Thankfully though, the http://www.ukwhoswho.com site does show a preview of the articles for users that "do not currently have access to this article" which makes some Wikipedia:Verifiability possible for users outside the paywall (subscription required). Italics

I have made this change to put Who's Who and Who Was Who into italics, as is normal for book titles. It seems to work, but if I have upset any applecarts inadvertently then please do feel free to undo (and explain so I can avoid making the same mistake again). Who Was Who link

When the template is used to display Who Was Who, it links to Who's Who. Would it be possible to make it link to Who Was Who? I know this is a redirect, but it does take readers to the relevant section of the article. DuncanHill (talk) 15:35, 21 June 2019 (UTC)

You only supplied one parameter, but Template:Who's Who#Usage shows that you need "three parameters, the bare minimum" - specifically {{Who's Who|id=ID|surname=SURNAME|othernames=OTHERNAMES}}. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 18:23, 13 April 2020 (UTC)

I think Duncan.Hull gave the impresion that parameter names can be omitted in [1]. But all parameters must be named. Unnamed parameters are ignored. {{Who's Who|id=U4000437}} would make a working link but you still need |surname= and |othernames= to display text on the link. hello @PrimeHunter: @Redrose64: good morning !!!!! thank you for fixing this template and my mistake also. there was lot of text in reference and i have come across this in some article. using bare three minimum parameters works flawlessly and anybody can figure out by looking at title and doi in whos who website. Website parameter

I removed this from the template, as it creates an unnecessary double listing of the source. For example:

• Anon (2017). "CORRIE, Sir Owen Cecil Kirkpatrick". Who's Who & Who Was Who. Vol. 2020 (online ed.). A & C Black. {{cite encyclopedia}}: More than one of |surname= and |author= specified (help); Unknown parameter |othernames= ignored (help) (Subscription or UK public library membership required.)

Has a link to the website and a link to our article on the publication (Who's Who (UK)). There does not seem to be any reason to have "ukwhoswho.com" listed as well.

The removal has recently been reverted. Can we agree to remove it to avoid this clutter? Cheers, Number 57 16:25, 29 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello @Number 57: Distinguishing between URL and Website provides useful information, they are different parameters in Template:Cite book, in this case:

• Website is for the domain name e.g. ukwhoswho.com
• URL is for the full address e.g. ukwhoswho.com/view/article/oupww/whoswho/U50605

The domain name in the latter gets hidden by the link text (e.g. "CORRIE, Sir Owen Cecil Kirkpatrick") described in website. The domain name is useful here for distinguishing between other books with the same name (see Who's Who) but different domains, such as ukwhoswho.com and whoswho.com etc Duncan.Hull (talk) 17:10, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

I still cannot see the point of listing the url of the website when we already have a direct link to the website (what are people expecting that link to be to?). It just looks like terrible formatting (the first time I saw this being used, I assumed it was an input error). Number 57 17:17, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

They are needed because the link and the domain name aren't the same thing, one gets italicised.com to give context, the other takes the reader directly to the source. Without it, the user has to mouseover the link to see the domain name. The same distinction is made in templates such as Template:Cite web, Template:Cite thesis and many others Duncan.Hull (talk) 17:41, 29 October 2020 (UTC)

Template missing/empty '|title='

I have hacked the sandbox to make a template that uses Module:Template wrapper. Using Module:Template wrapper allows editors to use {{Who's Who}} with all of the available cs1|2 parameters without the need to modify {{Who's Who}} so that those parameters can be supported. The examples from the ~/doc page have been copied as-is to the Template:Who's Who/testcases page so that you can compare current v. proposed.

Things that have changed:

1. instead of {{cite book}}, the proposal uses {{cite encyclopedia}}; this is in keeping with similar wrapper templates ({{cite ODNB}}, etc)
2. the publisher marketing fluff ("an imprint of Bloomsbury Publishing plc") removed
3. |website=ukwhoswho.com removed; in the pending version of Module:Citation/CS1, |work= and its aliases will not be supported in {{cite book}} and {{cite encyclopedia}}
4. |type= is documented to take the single value was; the live version of the template does not recognize that parameter value – it does recognize the undocumented value online; the proposal recognizes |type=was and does not recognize |type=online.
   • ~640 articles using |type=was
   • no articles using |type=online
5. the proposal template will accept a single parameter |title=; this is in keeping with similar wrapper templates ({{cite ODNB}}, etc) and will allow us to deprecate and ultimately remove support for |surname= and |othernames=

Things that should be done:

1. deprecate |surname= and |othernames=; it is not necessary to make editors disassemble the Who's Who entry title just to have the template reassemble it
2. move {{Who's Who}} to {{Cite Who's Who}}; this will allow {{sfn}} (and others) to read the {{cite Who's Who}} template wikitext looking for author/date/reference

In article namespace, I have replaced all use of |surname= and |othernames= with |title= and all use of |accessed= with |access-date=. As of the timestamp of this posting, this search in article namespace returned zero results as did this search.

I have hacked the sandbox to remove |surname=, |othernames=, and |accessed=. I also qualified |entry-url= and |entry-url-access= with |id=. If |id= is empty or omitted, the template will not fill |entry-url= and |entry-url-access= so that |title= does not link to a 404 page.

Examples in ~/testcases. Without objection I will update this template in a few days.
