"Major" vs "other" edit

What empirical or sourced criteria is used to determine whether a promotion is 'major' or 'other'? It seems like original research to arbitrarily make the cutoff K-1 Heroes, when it could be argued that EliteXC or IFL is on the same competitive level (in the business sense of the term).

My proposed criteria for 'major' promotions would be:

  • National/international television presence
  • National/international PPV events several times a year in two or more physical venues
  • Official sanctioning as a professional MMA promotion (ie, conformation to Unified Rules in the United States)

Thoughts? --Bk0 (Talk) 19:51, 1 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

I'm reorganizing the structure of the template and reorganizing the promotions into the more objective classification of regions instead of status. It doesn't seem as if anyone is participating in this discussion and after someone added Art of War into the majors category, a cleanup had to be done somehow. hateless 01:58, 27 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
That seems like a more reasonable & empirical classification system. We may have to reclassify PRIDE in the future given that they are now under North American ownership and may continue to hold events there. --Bk0 (Talk) 00:27, 29 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Re-Ordering Orgs edit

It looks like some attempt to put orgs in order has made, which I agree with. I think they’re due for some updating, though.

Here’s what I would propose (US orgs), based on: TV deals and ratings Fighter quality/rankings and name recognition Live attendance History National vs Regional Presence

Majors: UFC – obvious, Strikeforce – They’ve made huge leaps in the last 1-2 yrs. Ratings and attendance for SF/WEC criss-cross, both have lots of highly ranked fighters. But SF has much more recognizable fighters and a network TV deal that got 4-5M viewers (domestic, up to 25M worldwide) last time., WEC, Bellator – A handful of ranked (Bloody Elbow Consensus) fighters. Some great new TV deals and buzz – NBC, FoxSports, Telemundo(Spanish), Score(Canada).

Mid-size: KOTC – National. HDNet broadcasts. Partnered with Mark (Survivor) Burnett. Tony Lopez the only remotely ‘name’ fighter I see., Adrenaline – gets a few major names like Tim Sylvia, Ben Rothwell, Pat Miletich, etc.

After that, they get so close, I’d be fine with alphabetical order for ones with articles, then alphabetical for ones without articles. Senor Vergara (talk) 19:06, 28 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Defunct Promotions edit

I have updated the template to allow that the promotions currently pwned by Pro Elite are not currently defunct. Unless we hear differently from a reputable source, noone should alter this. Unak78 (talk) 12:57, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Yup, agreed. (Have ProElite ever "pwned" any promotions btw? Certainly not the UFC in any case ;) --aktsu (t / c) 13:01, 15 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I can't find any Vyper Fight League news after July 09. This suggests JBL pulled his backing http://rootzoo.com/threads/view/Pro-Wrestling/WWE/Wrestling-NewsRumors-72309-WWE-Drug-Testing-JBL-Update-TNA-Star-Reported-Forgot-his-finish-TNA-SPOILER_263334. Their website is gone. Moving them to defunct. Senor Vergara (talk) 17:31, 28 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

HDNet Fights. Not sure what to do with them. I think they still exist. But they only sponsored 2 of their own events in 2007 and none since. If they only broadcast other group's events, they aren't an MMA org. But they do still exist as a broadcast entity. I'm leaning to putting them under defunct, since the template is only about MMA orgs. Senor Vergara (talk) 17:31, 28 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

After a little more thought, I think they should move. Affliction still exists, but doesn't promote anymore. Bodog still exists, but doesn't promote anymore. Senor Vergara (talk) 19:02, 28 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Redlinks edit

I would like to remove the organizations that do not have articles. There is no reason they cannot be added when an article is created. Without a source for the existence of these organizations, listing them here is original research. If they are sourced in another article, they need to be pipelinked to that article.--2008Olympianchitchat 21:38, 7 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

I think whether the 'lesser' ones belong or not is a debatable issue (I lean to keeping them, however). I don't know about calling it 'original research', though. Won't the template support an external link proving their existence? Senor Vergara (talk) 17:19, 28 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Template Errors edit

When you click the V/T/E links, they take you to the wrong place. Instead of going to Template:Professional mixed martial arts organizations, they go to Template:Major Professional mixed martial arts organizations, which doesn't exist. Didn't used to do that. Anyone know how to fix? Senor Vergara (talk) 23:15, 15 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Now fixed.Rangoon11 (talk) 23:19, 15 October 2012 (UTC)Reply
