I have modified the code based on the version used for {{History of the United Kingdom}}. It has two advantages:

By setting an optional parameter this template can now be used as a navigational footnote template. The parameter is bar=yes
While doing this I made the list at the side collapse. This will stop this template overwhelming stub or start articles, and it will allow the more accurate placement of images in larger ones.
