This template adds article talk pages, category talk pages, template talk pages, etc. (whatever it is placed on) to Category:WikiProject Insects articles. It is also used to track article classifications and presents readers with a current "to do" list.
Please be very careful when editing this template if you don't understand MediaWiki Parser Functions. This template is now rather complicated and could easily be broken. (Note that you may find m:Magic words and m:ParserFunctions very helpful in understanding what this does... consider consulting with User:Sarefo before making any changes, please)
Usage
The template always goes onto Talk pages, not article pages. The template must be transcluded and not substituted (using subst).

For articles which have not yet been assessed, simply use{{WikiProject Insects}}. This default places the article in Category:Unassessed Insects articles and Category:Unknown-importance Insects articles, and doesn't change the wording of the template in any way.
Optional parameters
- ants – set
|ants=yesif the article is supported by Ant task force.- This parameter populates Category:Ant task force articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:Ant task force articles by quality based upon the
|class=parameter. - ants-importance (only used if
|ants=yesis set; uses the same values as|importance=) – Importance rating within Ant task force- This importance rating populates the relevant subcategory of Category:Ant task force articles by importance.
- If
|attention=yesis also set, this parameter populates Category:Ant articles needing attention. - If
|needs-image=yesis also set, this parameter populates Category:Ant articles needing images.
- This parameter populates Category:Ant task force articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:Ant task force articles by quality based upon the
- attention – set
|attention=yesif the article needs immediate attention from experienced editors. Use only if another parameter does not cover the need for attention; this should be used sparingly. It is strongly encouraged to also add a section to the talk page explaining what needs attention.- This parameter populates Category:Insects articles needing attention.
- class – valid values are listed in the custom class mask. See the project's quality scale for details. Setting an explicit value of NA is rarely necessary; for this, either leave
|class=blank or omit the parameter. - Hymenoptera – set
|Hymenoptera=yesif the article is supported by Hymenoptera task force.- This parameter populates Category:Hymenoptera articles, and the relevant subcategory of Category:Hymenoptera articles by quality based upon the
|class=parameter. - Hymenoptera-importance (only used if

- importance – valid values are: top, high, mid, low, na (case-insensitive). See the project's importance scale for details. Setting an explicit value of NA is rarely necessary; for this, either leave
|importance=blank or omit the parameter. - listas – This parameter, which is the equivalent of the DEFAULTSORT sortkey that should be placed on all biographical articles, is a sortkey for the article talk page (e.g. for William Kirby, use
|listas=Kirby, Williamso that the talk page will show up in the K's and not the W's of the various assessment and administrative categories). This is important because it is one source used by those who set DEFAULTSORT on the article; consider also setting the DEFAULTSORT for the article when setting this parameter. For more information about this, please see Wikipedia:Categorization of people § Ordering names in a category.
If the article is using {{WikiProject banner shell}} then it is preferable to add|listas=to that template instead of a project banner template. Putting the parameter on more than one template is not required. - needs-audio – set
|needs-audio=yesto request that an audio file(s) be included in this article to improve its quality.- This parameter populates Category:Wikipedia requested audio of animals.
- needs-image – set
|needs-image=yesto request that an image(s) be included in this article to improve its quality.- This parameter populates Category:Wikipedia requested images of insecta.
- category – set
|category=noif, and only if, a banner is being used for demonstration or testing purposes, to prevent unnecessary or undesirable categorization. Otherwise, omit this parameter.
Aliases
- The first positional parameter is recognised as an alias for
|class=. If both|class=and the positional parameter are present, the positional parameter is ignored.
- The second positional parameter is recognised as an alias for
|importance=. If both|importance=and the positional parameter are present, the positional parameter is ignored.- Note: this use of positional parameters is non-standard and may confuse some bots and scripts.
- The parameter
|needs-photo=is recognised as an alias for|needs-image=. If both|needs-image=and|needs-photo=are present,|needs-photo=is ignored.
