Ray Martynuik edit

  • ... that NHL first-round draft pick Ray Martynuik ended his final full season by stopping the team bus and throwing his gear into Moyie Lake?

  • Ok, before we do anything else, the fact that he was selected in the first round isn't cited, although I think we have articles on each year's draft and it shouldn't be hard to find. You also apparently misspelled his name. "Martynuik" isn't an "alternate spelling": it's the only spelling and the other one is just lazy sportswriters getting it wrong. Not technically a BLP since he passed in 2013, but still something to fix before we show this on the front page. — LlywelynII 16:48, 29 March 2015 (UTC)
  • I added a reference for the first round pick. I'm not convinced that the name is spelled incorrectly. Canada.com gives one spelling, but the vast majority of sources use "iu". This includes NHL.com, hockey-reference.com, WHL.ca, The Hockey News, HockeyDB.com, and the Cranbrook Daily Townsman (the newspaper of the city in which he spent much of his adult life). Both the Boquete Panama Guide and Flin Flon Online use both spellings in the same article, so that leaves Canada.com as the only source that uses "ui" consistently. • Again, it's not just an "alternate spelling" and your Canada.com source doesn't just use it more "consistently" than the others: it very pointedly states "The goalie should have known he was on thin ice when every newspaper in town misspelled his name "Martyniuk." Assuming that this is a RS, the others are simply wrong. I don't really want to post overly personal info here, but you can also confirm via Google that Judy A Martynuik lives in Cranbrook and doesn't misspell her own name. As this page will be one of his major legacies, it shouldn't be perpetuating the misspelling at all (except to debunk it), much less using it for its title. — LlywelynII 15:17, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Yes, Canada.com is a reliable source. That does not guarantee accuracy. The National Hockey League, Western Hockey League, and The Hockey News are also reliable sources, and they all use the other spelling. The search hit for his wife looks credible. I also just came across a Spokesman-Review article from 1980 that mentions Ray Martynuik. I'll move the article based on the result for his wife despite the fact that the evidence is, at this point, inconclusive. GaryColemanFan (talk) 22:41, 30 March 2015 (UTC)
  • Alright, now that that's out of the way: long enough; actually created by User:Skudrafan1 on October 15, 2007, but 5×'d w/i the appropriate timeframe; no noticeable POV issues. (Most notable point seems to be source that calls him the biggest bust in NHL history & another source calls him the "can miss kid" instead of the "can't..." but both of those seem more pleasant to pass by in silence.) Well sourced; Earwig didn't find any copyvios. Good to go, although I'll note the hook is somewhat misleading (he never played a day in the NHL, let alone several seasons) and obscures the guy's actual claim to notability (first-round draft who never played a day in the NHL). — LlywelynII 15:39, 31 March 2015 (UTC)
