This page is difficult to find edit

WAIS should link to this article - brad s — Preceding unsigned comment added by 207.1.15.107 (talk) 23:54, 27 February 2006‎ (UTC)Reply

It does. Benn Newman 03:18, 28 February 2006 (UTC)Reply
Should searches for WAI serVICE go here for now, too? Jodi.a.schneider 14:47, 31 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
If that is/was used to refer to WAIS, yes. --Benn Newman 02:30, 1 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Only historical significance? edit

Does WAIS now only have historical significance? If so the article should plainly state so. Mathiastck 17:07, 9 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

There are a few WAIS servers running. WAIS is difficult to setup/use using "modern" software; it is not really used. Benn Newman 18:29, 9 August 2006 (UTC)Reply
This page should be tagged with the appropriate internet history categories. I think it's important to preserve information about WAIS before it is lost. Jodi.a.schneider 14:47, 31 October 2006 (UTC)Reply
Feel free to help. ;) --Benn Newman 02:30, 1 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Pretty sure wais has gone away by now, but the article should say more about the end of it in the History Section. The comparison to World Wide Web is also quite weak. Do I need to sign the mobile interface? Shanen (talk) 01:20, 25 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. I came here to find out whether WAIS is dead technology now and what happened to it after the 1990s, and the article doesn't really have any info. --Ef80 (talk) 15:33, 2 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

Requesting more information on relationship to U.S. government documents edit

Is GPOAccess still using WAIS? Jodi.a.schneider 14:47, 31 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Probably not. --Benn Newman 02:30, 1 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Expand using comp.infosystems.wais FAQ list - would that be OK? edit

My goodness, this page is skimpy. Not even any mention of the participants of the WAIS project, or how it preceded the WWW and was competing with Gopher for being the most successful distributed information service. I suppose the FAQ from comp.infosystems.wais - http://www.uni-giessen.de/faq/archiv/wais-faq.getting-started/msg00000.html for example - could be used as a starting point for expanding this article. What is the Wipipedia policy on including or recycling stuff from Usenet FAQ lists, that are not otherwise marked with copyright information? I think it should be in the spirit of those Usenet FAQ lists, but that doesn't mean it's officially acceptable? --Lasse Hillerøe Petersen 18:14, 14 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

vs WWW edit

It could be mentioned that WAIS, Gopher, and the WWW were seen as equal competitors in the early 90s. 68.144.96.168 (talk) 05:17, 8 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Interesting. Any citations to suggest on that, or any way to verify? Jodi.a.schneider (talk) 20:17, 8 August 2010 (UTC)Reply
