Rewrite edit

Obviously needs a better map of the region than the current placeholder, and there's lots more history on the CVRVV website if anyone can be bothered.... FlagSteward 17:46, 28 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

History - Tax breaks? edit

At present the article says that production of this wine was encouraged by 'tax breaks'. The context here puts these 'tax breaks' as originating perhaps as early as the mid-ninth century, extending past the 12th century and up to perhaps 1788. The wines may have been exempted from feudal duties of various kinds, but to use the modern term 'tax break' is ahistoric. I'd be interested to know how Portugal got tax revenues from wines in the middle ages. By the 17th and 18th centuries in France wine was one of the most heavily taxed commodities, largely through the imposition of 'aides' and 'octrois'. Was the Portuguese system similar?Thomas Peardew (talk) 15:27, 18 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
