"However, among the highlander groups, a similar, cross-cultural clan-based orientation and highly marked sexual roles have created a situation where there has been a shortage of adult males."

a similar, cross-cultural clan-based orientation and highly marked sexual roles—not to mention blood feud—not so long ago, a significant reason why there was a shortage of adult males. 65.95.37.175 22:52, 13 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

This article is unclear as to whether this custom is still practiced or not. 220.253.134.122 09:04, 22 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I don't understand this section at all.

"Second, they are limited to the traditional female immunity to blood-feud, which remains a major cause of male mortality. If a clan is under siege and all of its males are potential targets for a vengeance murder, the "sworn virgin" is limited to immunity as a target and limited to carrying out crucial men's work without fear of being killed."

Could someone please clean up the language to make it more comprehensible? I think this is an attempt to say that not being killed in feuds is a disadvantage for sworn virgins. That makes little enough sense that I really hope I'm interpretting wrong.

Who wrote this in present tense and for what reason? This custom died out at turn of 20th century at most places or during communist rule in most isolated communities.

A non-nutral point of view??? edit

"'Sworn virgins' enjoy great privilege in comparison to those living a female gender. They can smoke, attend male-only events, participate in male-only activities, use men's tools like guns and certain musical instruments, and generally obtain the respect of their born-male peers like any other man."

Um, has anyone has noticed this passage (in my mind) promotes the life style that it is telling about. Oh, and women do have rights, we can smoke, use guns (I don't see how guns are a "man's tool" and I think it is sexist of this article to say so, just look at Sarah Palin, she is a member of the National Rifle Association). And we women also have respect in the world to. If you ask me this article is bias towards the left. And is should not be. Nor am I saying that it should be bias towards the right. I will be changing the passage and if anyone does not like it, they can weigh in on the talk page and change what I said, but I will change it back. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Miagirljmw14 (talkcontribs) 20:56, 6 December 2008 (UTC)Reply
