Cleanup in progress

Hi - I have done a bit of work on this page to clean it up and make it consistent with the treatment of other Australian universities. So far I have:

1. added a brief history of Swinburne, drawing on external sources wherever possible, including circumstances in which Swinburne acquired campuses at Prahran, Wantirna and Croydon;

2. added a section on governance, international rankings and the university's Faculty structure, modelled on the format for the Australian National University Wikipedia page;

3. added a section on the university's various Research Centres;

4. added reference to significant recent building works (ATC and AMDC).

In making the above changes and additions, I am aware that this page has been fraught and of poor quality for many years - with a history of inappropriate/dubious/promotional content being added including by persons associated with the university. In cleaning up the page and creating a balanced Wiki entry I have modelled both the content and tone on pages for other Australian universities, including the Australian National University, RMIT University and the University of Melbourne. I have also drawn on Creative Commons licenced images from the Swinburne Image Bank to freshen it up.

There is still a fair bit of work to go and more information to add to bring this page up to scratch and into line with other Australian universities. To further improve the page, work could include the following (note - this is not an exhaustive list):

- updated student numbers and financial information

- a more detailed history, and especially more detail about developments in the period from 1908 (founding) to 1992 (University status)

- history/list of former Chancellors/ Vice-Chancellors (and Heads of the Institute prior to 1992)

- further detail on each of the campuses including notable developments

- information on any residential colleges associated with the university

- better organisation of information on the university's Colleges and Schools, perhaps organised in this way: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMIT_University#Colleges_and_schools

- information on the university's Library (e.g. here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RMIT_University#Libraries).

Merger with Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus

Sorry, my bad, I was meaning to, but then got caught up with something else and forgot. Basically, Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus is simply just one of nine campuses at Swinburne, but is the only one with its own article, and it's not the main campus for the University. The article Swinburne University of Technology currently isn't overcrowded, and I think it would be a better fit there. Larger universities in Australia that have much more information on their main page don't seem to have individual campus pages (eg. Melbourne University), although, admittedly, Monash University does - but again its main page is much longer. So, all in all, I think it's probably not worth having two separate articles until there is either a significant amount of information on the University in general on Swinburne University of Technology, or more information specifically on the Sarawak Campus. --DWZ (talk • email • contribs) 17:05, 6 January 2007 (UTC)

Disagree. The structure of Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus is very different from Swinburne. It is a private university (vs. Swinburne's public status); operated in partnership with the Sarawak Foundation and Sarawak Higher Education Foundation [1]. While I am not too sure about the status of Chancellor, I believe that the different campuses of Swinburne Australia do not have one for each and every campus. However, the Sarawak Campus has its own chancellor and even its own logo - yellow and black instead of Swinburne Australia's red and black. To simply dismiss Swinburne Sarawak as just another campus of Swinburne Australia can be considered a mistake.

I will be expanding the Sarawak campus article in the near future, but not now as I have my hands full at the moment. Please reconsider this merger.– Matthew A. Lockhart ^(talk) 10:55, 13 January 2007 (UTC)

Established

In my opinion this should reflect the founding of the institution (1908), rather than the granting of public university status (1992).

See RMIT's article where they list 1887, rather than 1992.

Advertising

This article is a disgusting example of the university abusing the wiki for advertising. Contains a completely biased tone, and contains absolutely no criticism. Some of the sections provide no relevance to the article, and are nothing more than blatant ad's for the Uni. And two months later these serious issues have still not been addressed. ASAIHL and ECIU

Swinburne is a member of the prestigious Association of Southeast Asian Institutions of Higher Learning[2], but its membership of European Consortium of Innovative Universities was inactive since 2012.[3][4]

Semi-protection due to vandalism and promotion

For an organisation that makes imoprtant claims to quality, this article is a blantant misuse of Wikipedia for purely promotional purposes. Major contributors are obviously closely connected with the organisation and judging from the brochure-style jargon, may even be the college PR staff. Dear Kudpung กุดผึ้ง: Thank you for editing and semi-protecting the article. But after your six-month semi-protection expired, the article attracted further vandalistic[5] and COI[6] edits. I wonder if you could please protect the article for another three to five years? You could semi-protect it. Or you could use pending changes level 1 protection. (Pending changes protection is a seldom-used feature. It came out in an RfC that it's a confusing feature. Dear @Kudpung: I see you've now semi-protected the article for another two years. Would semi-protection for three or four years instead, or even indefinite semi-protection, be better? Dear @Kudpung: By the time of the fifth protection, maybe indef is acceptable. Alternatively, we could establish consensus for indef here. A third option would be for us to do the following:

1. Wait for the semi-protection to expire.
2. Wait for the COI editors to start editing again.
3. Roll back to just before semi-protection expired.
4. Semi-protect the article again.

Swinburne University of Technology (often simply referred to as Swinburne) is an Australian public university of technology based in Melbourne, Victoria. Swinburne was founded in 1908 by the Honourable George Swinburne as the Eastern Suburbs Technical College. Its foundation campus is located in Hawthorn, a suburb of Melbourne which is located 7.5 km from the Melbourne central business district.[12]

In its first year, it enrolled 80 students in subjects including carpentry, plumbing and gas fitting.[13] Today, Swinburne operates five campuses in two countries and has an enrolment of 60,000 students across vocational, undergraduate and postgraduate levels.[14]

In addition to its main Hawthorn campus, Swinburne has campuses in the Melbourne metropolitan area at Wantirna and Croydon. Swinburne also has a campus in Sarawak, Malaysia which it has operated in partnership with the Sarawak State Government since 2000.[15] Swinburne also has an online campus, Swinburne Online, which has been in operation since 2011.[16]

Academic

Governance Swinburne is governed by a 10-member Council, whose members include the Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor.[49] Graham Goldsmith has been Chancellor of the University since 2014.[50] Professor Linda Kristjanson has been Vice-Chancellor of Swinburne University since 2011 and was previously the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development) at Curtin University.[51] She was the Telstra Australian Business Woman of the Year in 2002.[52]

Faculties Swinburne comprises three "super faculties", each of which conducts both teaching and research.[59]

Science, Engineering and Technology The Faculty of Engineering and Industrial Sciences comprises the School of Science, the School of Engineering and the School of Software and Electrical Engineering and associated research centres.[60]

The university also operates Swinburne College, a provider of pathway education courses which prepare students for university study. Programs offered by Swinburne College include English language, foundation studies, diploma and professional year programs.[69]

Other

Swinburne University of Technology is a principal partner to the Victorian Division of Engineers Australia.[4] Swinburne Psychology Clinic is the largest university psychology clinic in Australia, and it has achieved an enviable reputation, not only for the services it provides, but also for its teaching and research. Affliations

Instead of edit-warring over this, I wonder what other users think of the long list of affiliations that an IP keeps adding. To me it feels like most of these are agreements/partnerships that the university has with various organisation. I would only count institutional affiliations in this list, e.g Universities Australia. The rest could go in a partnerships section if referenced well.
