Double high tide edit

Many sources I have seen state that the double high tide phenomenon is not caused by the Isle Wight alone (as is popularly supposed). Indeed the effect can be seen at other locations along the south coast of England and also in France. The front of the Southampton Tide Tables has a good write-up (but not linkable to). Here's a link to a pretty good authoritative source - Lord Kelvin. This article should probably say something about this.

Curious. However, the idea that it is caused primarily by the influence of the Isle of Wight isn't merely popular supposition. It is stated in the 1912 legislation reforming the Southampton Harbour Board as an explanation of Southampton's advantages as a port, and is also stated by many reasonably scholarly works on Southampton. Any edit to include the alternative explanation would have to be alongside the IOW explantion, I think. Mattley (Chattley) 00:01, 13 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
