Article title

This article used to be titled "Ralph Becker (Utah)" but was changed to "Ralph Elihu Becker, Jr." in May 2009. The comment at the time was "If the name is unique, doesn't it make more sense to call the person by his own name? Following pattern of Jon Huntsman."

The Manual of Style says "the article title should generally be the name by which the subject is most commonly known". I have never heard the Salt Lake City mayor referred to as "Ralph Elihu Becker, Jr.", so I suspect it's not "the name by which [he] is most commonly known". He is almost always called "Ralph Becker" [1][2][3][4][5]. His father seems to have been known as "Ralph Becker" [6][7] or "Ralph E. Becker" [8][9][10].

I suggest changes to both article titles:

  1. Remove the spelled-out middle name. Neither person is known this way so it doesn't belong in the title (see Manual of Style above).
  2. The son is not often called "Jr.", unlike "Ken Griffey, Jr.", "Harry Connick, Jr.", or "Cuba Gooding, Jr.". For whatever it's worth, Google returns 12 times more hits hits for "Ralph Becker" than "Ralph Becker Jr.". Perhaps we should use a different disambiguation scheme instead of "Ralph Becker" and "Ralph Becker, Jr."
For the son I suggest something like:
  • "Ralph Becker (mayor)"
  • "Ralph Becker (Utah)"
  • "Ralph Becker (Democrat)"
For the father I suggest something like:
  • "Ralph E. Becker"
  • "Ralph Becker (ambassador)"
  • "Ralph Becker (Republican)"
I assume "Ralph Becker" should remain a disambiguation page.

With no objections, I moved the page to "Ralph Becker (mayor)". Maybe the argument can be made that "Ralph Becker (Utah)" is better since it can refer to his positions in the state Democratic party or state legislature or possible future political ambitions. ——Rich jj (talk) 20:48, 24 March 2010 (UTC)
