February 2007 edit

The transposition described is a write-by-row, read-by-column route transposition, not a route transposition, as that term is used in, for example, Helen Gaines 1939 "Elementary Cryptanalysis." Somewhere along the line someone on the web posted an incorrect description, and it's been passed along from site-to-site since. Most of them having copied from here. The proper description is here: Amaerican Cryptogram Association - Railfence This has been discussed at talk:transposition cipher. --jdege 00:00, 27 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

I've corrected the page, and nobody seems to have objected to the new contents, so I don't think we have a controversy, anymore.
Though I'd appreciate it if someone who was better at wiki formatting would make the grid look a little prettier.

March 2021 edit

This article is very short, and much less detailed than other articles in the category “classical ciphers” So I suggest we mark this article as a stub. 67.3.49.20 (talk) 14:45, 24 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

July 2022 - Avoidance of misinterpretations and enhancing of scope of description edit

I am myself an ESL. It makes real damage to knowledge allow distribution of information that is language misleading. You can check how versions of this entrance in another languages have translated "rail fence" to "train rails". The keeping of the image helps, but without explanation does not help enough. I will try again to modify this aspect to link the image with the text without being called condescending that was not the intention. Perhaps according to the undoer only persons with English as mother language should be allowed to edit this entry.

On another line, explanation of different approaches to the rail fence cipher using initial offset should not be seen as additional complication but an enhancement of the description of the cipher. I am really surprised by the God power attributed themself by the undoer to decide what must be in or out. Whatever I will not undo the undo done by him/er. At least anyone interested can check my proposed text in
