Talk:Public holidays in Australia

Latest comment: 5 days ago by HiLo48 in topic Heritage Day

This list belongs in the Australia article as part of the standard country format. I suggest a merge. I don't think other countries have a separate article for holidays. --Jiang 18:04 12 Jul 2003 (UTC)

A check of the Holiday article shows that a number of countries have separate articles concerning their national holidays. Keep this separate and expand the article, with a brief article in the main country section. kiwiinapanic 07:54, 8 Feb 2004 (UTC)
The country articles are supposed to be about important stuff. Cameron is quite right. Tannin 10:43, 8 Feb 2004 (UTC)

Labor Day vs. Labor Day#Labor Day in Australia edit

The paragraph on Labor Day doesn't match the text on Labor Day#Labor Day in Australia. Can someone familiar with this fix them, please ? -- PFHLai 19:11, 2 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

Easter Tuesday edit

Easter Tuesday was only a bank holiday in Tasmania up until 2006 (that is, government departments, banks, the University got the day off, but no-one else did). From 2007 it is a "full" holiday. I can't find any notices or news reports on the change though - just that the official source has quietly updated. Anyone have any more details? -- Chuq 04:52, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

This doesn't seem to have happened. It remains only a government holiday.--Dacium (talk) 22:35, 14 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

"Australia has ten standard public holidays nationally" edit

It looks like only nine to me.

For boxing day, is lists the 2 dates that it can be on. Is that not the same for all public holidays that fall on a Sunday? --RobBrisbane 09:16, 17 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Its 10. New Years, Australia, Good Friday, Easter Sat, Easter Mond, Anzac Day, Queens Birth, Christmas, Boxing, Labour Day or eqivalent. Its sometimes caled nine because easter saturday never falls on a week day and there is no weekday holiday for it, but its technically a public holiday.--Dacium (talk) 22:35, 14 April 2008 (UTC)Reply
Easter Saturday is not a holiday in TAS or WA (see references to state govt sites within article), so it's not a national holiday. MrDizzy (talk) 15:27, 16 August 2008 (UTC)MrDizzyReply

Substitute Holidays in Victoria edit

Substitute Holidays for Christmas and New Years were restored in 2004 by the current State Government.

There is no "substitute" Holiday for Anzac day in victoria for 2015 http://www.theage.com.au/victoria/no-extra-public-holiday-for-anzac-day-2015-20140720-zv1ep.html http://www.business.vic.gov.au/victorian-public-holidays-and-daylight-saving/victorian-public-holidays

I think that WA has it as a regulation that an extra Anzac day holiday on Monday exists, no one else does. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 199.61.25.253 (talk) 19:22, 2 April 2015 (UTC)Reply

What is Easter Saturday ? edit

The wikipedia entry for "Easter Saturday" states it is the Saturday which is 6 days after Easter Sunday. However, in Australia, the day between Good Friday and Easter (Sunday) is always called Easter Saturday.Eregli bob (talk) 08:47, 20 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Secularly it is called Easter Saturday, the christian name is Holy Saturday, with easter saturday being the next saturday.--Dacium (talk) 22:35, 14 April 2008 (UTC).Reply

What is the concern about the term "easter saturday". In NSW and QLD it is called the day after Good Friday and in Victoria it is called the day before Easter Sunday. Is there some type of religious taboo about mentioning Easter Saturday - like Vodemort from Harry Potter?

Problems edit

There are some problems i see with article. It claims boxing day for example in QLD is not substituted unless it falls on a sunday. This is totally incorrect. If boxing day is a monday it is subsituated to tuesday. I blieve most of that table is wrong/missleading because the acts have been poorly read/understood. Furthermore, the minister may declar any other public holiday and in modern times the same number is given every year, so when the rules say we don't get one, we usually get it anyway be proclomation.--Dacium (talk) 03:45, 17 November 2008 (UTC)Reply

Same story in NSW. I'd update the table myself if I knew how to

Only some states are mentioned in the "Public holidays by state" section.

I think a table of the actual dates for each state for the current/next year would be a great idea!

Request to Change Adelaide Cup / Adelaide Cup Day -> March Public Holiday edit

The article has a few references for SA's "Adelaide Cup Day", but that name is only colloquial and the official name of the holiday is "March Public Holiday". March public holiday legislatively falls on the third monday in March, but has been proclaimed to fall on the second monday until 2019. This is all from the existing source "Public Holidays 2011" SA, http://www.safework.sa.gov.au/show_page.jsp?id=2483#item33650

The name in this article should reflect the actual name of the holiday, as wikipedia does not currently recognise it at all.

Easter Sunday in Queensland edit

The table has Easter Sunday as not being a public holiday in Queensland. This is incorrect; it has been a public holiday in Queensland since 2017.

Source: https://www.qld.gov.au/recreation/travel/holidays/public

See footnote 5 "Easter Sunday is appointed as a public holiday. These arrangements have been in place since 2017 following amendments to the Holidays Act 1983 (passed by Parliament on 1 December 2016)."

Invasion Day? edit

Maybe it's too soon to tell whether the current protests in Australia mean the end of Australia Day, or merely its renaming to Invasion Day. Presumably this will be sorted out one way or another in due course. (My dad was born on April 25, 1916, the first Anzac Day if one counts the beach storming at Gallipoli as the zeroth Anzac Day. At least that's not currently being protested.) Vaughan Pratt (talk) 22:32, 26 January 2021 (UTC)Reply

Heritage Day edit

how is the day celebrated 41.122.132.109 (talk) 13:04, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply

This Australian has never heard of it. It's certainly not a national public holiday, nor a public holiday in my state, Victoria. HiLo48 (talk) 23:42, 13 April 2024 (UTC)Reply
