Links to a blog edit

Do these links really belong here?

I certainly never would have added them, though they're not blatantly inappropriate. -- Jmabel | Talk 20:49, 12 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Usually I'd say no, but I'd agree with you, they're not blatantly inappropriate--I don't mind if they're left in. --Lukobe 21:07, 12 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Nick Lowe's middle name edit

I believe Nick's middle name is Orain -- not Drain. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 143.165.201.47 (talkcontribs) 26 December 2006.

You could be right; it's uncited, and I don't see anything I'd consider a really reliable online source for either one. - Jmabel | Talk 06:06, 28 December 2006 (UTC)Reply
Needs to be confirmed. It's listed as "Brian" in the infobox and "Drain" in the article. Cloonmore (talk) 02:39, 16 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

I have the album, "Labour of Love," which is a tribute album. The songwriting credits show his middle initial as O. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.215.137.173 (talk) 05:34, 21 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Can't find the source right now, but it's definitely "Drain". There's an interview out there with him somewhere confirming this -- apparently, it was his father's name. "Orain" (or "Nicholas O. Lowe") shows up on some publishing records simply because someone at BMI misread Lowe's initial hadwritten application form, which asked for his full name. Consequently "Orain" instead of "Drain" was entered into the BMI database.... 172.130.26.249 (talk) 19:56, 29 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

"Nicholas Drain LOWE" is given for his record at Companies House, which I think has legal status. Perhaps this could be used as a source in the article? I'm not sure if this is necessarily his birth name. Martinevans123 (talk) 13:10, 20 July 2018 (UTC)Reply
A search at FreeBMD for "Lowe" births, between March and December 1949 reveals only one in Surrey, registered in June 1949, mother's name THATCHER: [1] The middle initial is clearly D., although this could, of course, be transcription error by "griff". Vandals edit

Someone just pulled down this enitre page. Please install anti vandal html. Thanks- Catherine Thanks so much to whomever restored this page. To wikipedia experts please enable anti vandalism mode on here. Thanks-Catherine —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Catherine Huebscher (talkcontribs) 18 January 2007.

Would that it were so simple as to have "anti vandalism mode". It is not easy to make automatic determinations what is vandalism and what are legitimate edits.
Anyone can revert vandalism simply by going to the article history and restoring the last good version of the article (with an appropriate summary: "revert vandal" will do). If an article is frequently vandalised, there are some thing we can do in terms of protection, but they also stop legitimate edits. - Jmabel | Talk 18:36, 7 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Best-known song edit

How can "Lowe's best-known song from the Brinsley Schwarz era," be a song that was recorded after that "era" because it was rejected by other members of the band? Nicmart 16:58, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

It doesn't say "best known recording." It says "best known song." Those songs are, in fact, from the Brinsley Schwarz era (since that's when he wrote them), even if the recordings that made them famous are from later.

The Bodyguard edit

What is the source of the assertion that Lowe was freed from commercial constraints because he became a millionaire due to sales of The Bodyguard? What was he worth before that? Has he said that he was less concerned about commercial success after this alleged windfall? Nicmart 17:04, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Not sure of the source, and I didn't write that, but I've heard him say that on two occasions. But I realize that is not citable. On his first U.S. tour after The Bodyguard he remarked on the pleasure of being able to bring a full band without thinking too much about the money involved. - Jmabel | Talk 20:25, 24 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Fair use rationale for Image:Nlowe bowi.jpg edit

Image:Nlowe bowi.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

More recent photo needed edit

I'm watching Nick Lowe on "Austin City Limits" this evening and he now looks nothing whatsoever like the photo on the main page. Can somebody please post a more recent picture? Ken Burch 5:14 23 August 2009 (UTC)

Article is utter crap edit

Pity poor Nick Lowe for being the subject of this abomination. It does irreparable damage to logic and the English language. My favorite example is how the birth of his son is tacked onto the end of sentence about his relationship with Carlene Carter and the Cash family. Connection? None. Nicmart (talk) 00:42, 30 October 2009 (UTC)Reply

Misunderstanding edit

I was reading Carlene Carter's bio, which stated that this person was deceased170.63.96.108 (talk) 17:48, 19 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Are you sure that wasn't Howie Epstein? He was involved with Carlene Carter after Nick Lowe and DID OD a few years ago.Ken Burch 5:13, 23 August 2009 (UTC)

The notation "(1979-1990)" after Lowe's name on the Carlene Carter page refers to when Lowe and Carter were married, not Lowe's birth and death. Frumpet (talk) 17:48, 30 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

Quotation edit

I'd put this in the quotations section, but I only remember hearing Lowe say it on the radio years ago (nothing to cite):

On the state of rock and roll or popular music: "It's a sick old horse, ain't it? And it's the musicians' fault. They're the witless bozos who are perpetrating it."

Frumpet (talk) 17:48, 30 October 2010 (UTC)Reply

What Does This Mean? edit

"Lowe became selective in his choice of production tasks." What? There were certain knobs he'd no longer touch? — Preceding unsigned comment added by GeneCallahan (talkcontribs) 05:01, 18 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

One assumes it means what jobs he took on. I don't have a problem with it. Wwwhatsup (talk) 10:28, 18 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Snare Drum Tyranny edit

The 'snare drum tyranny' quote:

http://archives.nodepression.com/2001/09/his-aim-is-true/6/

I'll get to fixing the citation when I'm on a computer instead of this galaxy phone. Aurrgh!  :)

I definitly remember the line from reading the article on paper all those years ago. It made an impression on me 'cause Nick put in a simple phrase something I'd been feeling about popular music for some time.

The source is right there with the quote: Sep-Oct 2001 No Depression (#35). Just needs the proper 'footnote'.

Drug and alcohol abuse edit

I am surprised in the article to find there is no reference to Lowe's well published periods of drug and/or alcohol dependency. They were significant periods of time and are partly covered here. Would someone with a closer affinity to Lowe than I like to address this in a balanced way ? Thanks, - Derek R Bullamore (talk) 15:23, 23 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
