Malcolm X Park?

Something this article is lacking, which I think it needs, but I am unqualified to write about at this point, is how the park became known as Malcolm X Park. I do intend to write a bit in here about the park's history as it relates to gangs and such, but the origin of the association with Malcolm X remains elusive, and I've been researching. I have heard that as well, that Malcolm X was directly connected with the park in such a way. However, sources lack. It took hours of digging to find only a little information on the official name-change that failed, but sources on the background of the origin of the park's Malcolm X-ness have eluded me. I removed the unsourced Malcolm X Park section because it claimed somehow that Congress overruled the DC people on their wish to rename the park. The truth is, the park is part of a National Park. It's the federal government's responsibility and right to name it whatever. 2012 Update: Finally found a reference to the origins of "Malcolm X Park". It seems that Angela Davis began it. This info with cite is now in the article. D Monack (talk) 00:54, 9 May 2012 (UTC)

Per WP:OFFICIAL and WP:BOLDSYN, it makes sense to have Malcolm X Park included in the title and bolded since it is a common, if not more common, colloquial name, and does have common use in official documents. Middle river exports (talk) 17:20, 24 October 2021 (UTC)

Drum group

Columbian College vs. Wayland Seminary

My understanding is that Columbian College was further up in Columbia Heights, and primarily between 13th & 14th Streets, around Gerard & Fairmont. Wayland Seminary, the precursor to Virginia Union, however, was located in the area that is now the park. Further, a large settlement of African Americans lived in the area prior to it becoming a park. Hey, don't take my word for it (even though my ancestors attended the school, and their picture adorns the walking tour marker that is at the park)-- read up on Booker T. Washington's stint there. In his letters from the era he speaks at length about how insufferable the Washington Negro is, and promptly decamps after I think only one semester. I guess I'll dig further for verifiable links, but there seems to be a conflation of Wayland and Columbian going on.

Title

Should be Meridian Hill Park. Its informal name can be noted in the first sentence, but the title of the article should be the official name. To the thoughts above on the talk page, no proof was provided of the popularity of the informal name. And informal doesnt make it worthy of the title page. People call the store Target as Tarje. Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park → Meridian Hill Park – WP:Commonname is by far Meridian Hill Park. It's the name used by the National Park Service, used by local news agencies, and even used by local travel magazines. The precedence is overwhelming. Support. Including two disputed names for a physical location in the article title does not appear to common practice, even where the "correct" name is hotly disputed - see, e.g., Derry or the State of Palestine. Therefore, while there is no specific policy against a "slashed" title, I think the name should be settled on one choice or the other. If this discussion were held 25 years ago, maybe Malcolm X Park would have been the consensus, but now I think it's clearly shifted towards Meridian Hill. I read the same article posted above to suggest that local use of the Malcolm X name has waned[1] in recent years, and there is no dispute that the official name is Meridian Hill. I think that changing the article title to "Meridian Hill Park" alone, with a note at the top of the article that "Malcolm X Park" is a commonly used name, would be most appropriate.
