Tom Dixon, Former Bassist for Kill Felix was born and lived in Macclesfield for 18 years. He now lives near Bath.

The above text or similar has been added a couple of times by an anon. A Google search for "Tom Dixon" "Kill Felix" yields no results, so I have reverted. Oldelpaso 20:01, 29 December 2005 (UTC)

Malas

I'm doubting the notability of Tarek Malas - I can't find any reference on google. Tempted to removed for lack of notability or verifiability. --Harris 13:38, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Intelligance in Local Government

i have searched and researched for signs of intelligance in macclesfield council, however after finding no signs of it, i have removed the section

fallibroome high school

NB Whilst Fallibroome High School may achieve 'renown' in Macclesfield. It is achieved at the expense of the pupils with learning difficulties, behaviour problems (including those medically diagnosed e.g. ADHD) and low self esteem.

Another famous 'Son of Macclesfield' was Kenneth Symonds who founded an empire built on the humble 'Stair Edging'. It still prospers and the company who manufacture these materials, Gradus Ltd, are the second largest employer in Macclesfield. Ken now lives quietly, in retirement, in London.

Etymology

User:JFBurton deleted the Etymology section as "nonsense". The claimed etymology seems reasonable to me so I reinstated it. Anyone got any reliable sources for the etymology? Billlion 15:59, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

I've added some new pieces to the Entymology and History sections, though I'm not sure how they fit in with other information already there. I suggest that the St. Michael's church entry is not really factual, unless some evidence of the church can be obtained that precedes the Domesday Book survey. I've also added the old name of the Hundred (Hamestan), but note in the History section that the Hundred is said to be "Macclesfield", although the name of the town had not stabilised to this at that time. I think it is much more likely that the Hundred's name was Hamestan, and that the main settlement in it was named an early version of the modern name, Macclesfield.  DDStretch  (talk) 12:54, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

I have removed this section for three reasons: it was completely uncited, the "fame" of those listed is entirely subjective, and it attracted hoax edits like wildfire. Oldelpaso 09:18, 29 November 2006 (UTC)

A Possible project (or sub-project) for Cheshire

I think a project or a sub-project (within the UK geography project) dealing with the whole of Cheshire would be a good idea. I have taken as a precedent the project about Cornwall, which any project dealing with Cheshire could hope to aspire to, since this project has constructed Featured Articles about Cornwall-related things. So, I've listed a proposed project concerning Cheshire on Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals. I think it can easily co-exist with Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography. I would not want to diminish or withdraw from this other project. If you are interested in contributing to this proposed project, please add your name to list at the appropriate place. If you think it might be better placed as a sub-project of the existing UK Geography Project, please say so on that project's talk page, here, and let us discuss it. Macclesfield in films

The article mentions two films shot (at least partly) in Macclesfield. However the Internet Movie DataBase, a site at least as reliable and infallible as Wikipedia itself :-), does not list any films shot there. Can anybody provide a source for the Macclesfield's claim to the cinematographic glory? --Jotel 09:13, 2 September 2007 (UTC)

The Notable Residents section

This section is of quite poor quality at the moment, as many of entries have no citations which verify the claim that the people are notable residents of Macclesfield. It has been tagged as being insufficiently referenced since April 2008, and the only change has been to add further unverified entries! The advice given in WP:BLP applies here for living people as can be seen if one reads it, as well as past discussions on WP:RS (see Wikipedia talk:Reliable sources#Wikipedia as a source?.) Furthermore, if any any point Macclesfield is nominated as a Good Article or Featured Article, citations in this article will be required from reliable sources verifying the entries. Consequently, I've removed all unreferenced entries from the section and placed them here in accordance with advice I received. When the entries have appropriate citations and verification (see WP:CITE, and WP:V), they can be re-added to the section which, at some point, needs to be rewritten as text and not as a list (see WP:UKCITIES as a guide). Note that a wikilink to an article which may or may not contain appropriate verification and citation is not sufficient: the actual verification and citation must occur in this article for the entry to be retained in this article. Finally, I think we should be alert to requiring new entries to have the appropriate verificatioon at the point of entry, or else suffer from removal here or deletion immediately they are seen.  DDStretch  (talk) 15:30, 24 November 2008 (UTC)

• Ephraim Jackson - Indentured for 4 years to a Joseph Hall family from this town, the family moved in a body to Chester County PA USA, where Ephraim, after a visit back to Macclesfield in 1709-1710, became a Quaker leader and patriarch of one of the Jackson lines in this part of Pennsylvania. (NB: I've transferred this here, as I'm not sure this person is even marginally notable, the apparent reference incorrectly positioned, notwithstanding.)

• Joseph McCabe - rationalist author.
• John Ryle - Industrialist known as the "Father of the United States Silk Industry".

• David Dickinson - Famous for TV Antique programme Bargain Hunt and for his use of the phrases "Cheap as Chips" and "Bobby Dazzler".
• Marshall Lancaster - Actor who portrays Chris Skelton in the BBCTV series 'Life On Mars' and 'Ashes To Ashes', born in Macclesfield.

Sport

• Ben Amos - Manchester United u19 goalkeeper. Made his debut against Middlesbrough on the 23rd September 2008. Has also been capped by England at youth level.

• Ian Curtis - Late lead singer of band Joy Division.
• Geoff Lloyd - well-known radio DJ for Virgin Radio grew up in Macclesfield.
• The Macc Lads - famous rock group, well known for obscenities in many of their lyrics.
• John Mayall, OBE - pioneering English blues singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist.
• Mr. Methane - Performing flatulist born in Macclesfield.
• Stephen Morris - Drummer/Percussion with Joy Division, New Order and The Other Two. He went to school with Ian Curtis.

Does anybody else find it incredibly ironic?

Partial Protection

Given the spate of disruptive additions of notable people to this article, I've partially protected it for one week. Given the jumping around of IP addresses used, I think doing a partial protection was better than blocking the IP addresses involved.  DDStretch  (talk) 18:02, 15 July 2015 (UTC)

2011 census figure

Does anyone know how the population figure 51,482 is calculated? I've added the six wards listed at [1] and got 43,425. The built-up area figures are 63,954 and 56,581. Espresso Addict (talk) 04:26, 21 January 2020 (UTC)

Proposed merge of Macclesfield Built-up area into Macclesfield
