Talk:List of hostage crises

Untitled edit

I don't want to edit this list myself, but quick question. Re: Fiji Coup of 2000, how can a coup be justifiably considered a hostage crises. Even if hostages were taken during event -one of which I didn't see mentioned in the article- wouldn't the importance of the hostage-taking be overshadowed by the coup itself, at least for classification purposes? Nagoya Hostage Crisis edit

A hostage crisis occurred in early 2007 in Aichi, Japan, near Nagoya. An ex-Yakuza took his family
hostage just 100 yards or so away from a major Japanese university. The event is historic in that a Japanese
serviceman was killed on duty, marking the first time that has happened in over a decade. I believe information
should be compiled for this incident and an article written. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.28.179.6 (talk) 00:38, 28 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

While tragic..... edit

While tragic, the listing of the recent school shootings is hardly in the same categories as the others.

Agreed. This list is for topics like Iran hostage crisis, Norrmalmstorg robbery, Munich massacre and Japanese embassy hostage crisis, where the hostage taking is central to the topic. --Abu Badali 12:15, 4 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

American focus edit

I think this list is quit Americancentric. It assumes readers know that Wisconsin is a state of the US, for example. CKSCIII 17:39, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Feel free to add any non-US hostage incidents, especially those that have articles (or write them if they don't exist). We could randomly delete half of the US listings, but that wouldn't really be an appropriate way to handle the imbalance. See Countering Systemic Bias. --Dhartung | Talk 22:01, 4 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Hainan Island incident edit

There's no doubt that the US airmen involved in this crisis were held against their will and were interrogated. However, we must remember that they had landed on Chinese soil illegally and had been arrested for this. They were not held hostage, they were just detained until the US and China agreed upon what to do. --One Salient Oversight 13:32, 10 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

That description reasonably applies to any "hostage crisis" involving a recognized sovereign government, which could reasonably come up with any legal fiction it wants regarding persons detained. Unless you have a better name for such incidents, and a good rationale for a well-scoped and NPOV list of them, leave it here for now.-- Dhartung | Talk 19:19, 25 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
The Hostage crisis article does not include these international disputes. It just cover kidnapper/siege situations, i.e. clearly criminal situations. Rwendland 14:29, 31 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

2007 Iranian seizure of Royal Navy personnel edit

Removed this reference, as it has not yet been established that this is indeed a hostage situation. See Talk:2007 Iranian seizure of Royal Navy personnel for details. -Etafly 02:13, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Next step edit

OK, what are we left with here? Are we supposed to create a List of disputed international detentions list? Is there an NPOV name we can possibly give those? --Dhartung | Talk 12:00, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Perhaps it belongs in the examples section of international incident. It doesn't deserve mention here, however. -Etafly 15:37, 4 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Spaghetti House Siege edit

The one I remember most as a child in London was the Spaghetti House Seige in 1975. Should that be added? Thegallery (talk) 22:40, 28 November 2007 (UTC)Reply

Yes. Rich Farmbrough, 09:55 20 June 2008 (GMT).

Title edit

"List of hostage incidents" might be better. Rich Farmbrough, 09:55 20 June 2008 (GMT).

So called "Yemen Hostage Crisis" is Killing_of_British_tourists_in_Yemen edit

The kidnapping is dated December 28, 1998 but now a person, Abu Hamza has been recently charged "in connection with a hostage-taking in Yemen in 1998 that resulted in four deaths" (3 x Britons and 1 x Australian). 1995 Urologico San Roman Tragedy edit

I made this time ago, was deleted and now is the only with a red link, why? If I wrong to write was enough to correct, was excessive to delete for me, cheers--Alainbo (talk) 20:50, 25 February 2018 (UTC)Reply

1990 Iraqi Invasion of Kuwait edit

Did everybody here forget that the 1990 Invasion of Kuwait involved Saddam Hussein's Iraqi Republican Guard taking all foreign visitors as hostages at the time? ---------User:DanTD (talk) 06:22, 30 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

Israel–Hamas war kidnappings seemingly out of order edit

In the list, Kidnappings during the 2023 Israel-Hamas war seems to be sorted at the top when sorting oldest-newest under "Start" and least-most in "Number of Hostages", even though it should be moved to the bottom for both. What is causing this? Is it sorted like this because its duration is set to "Ongoing"? Because I see nothing standing out in the formatting. AdoTang (talk) 16:12, 16 January 2024 (UTC)Reply
