Misleading/Illogical use of drinkers only data from WHO report edit

The article's main table (pure alcohol consumption among persons (age 15+, drinkers only), in liters per drinker per year, 2016) shows data selected from the WHO report 'Global status report on alcohol and health 2018'. Based on the page title (List of countries by alcohol consumption per capita) and the text under the header '2016 WHO data', a reader would expect this table to show countries ordered by alcohol consumption per capita, but instead the table shows the countries' alcohol consumption per capita drinkers only. This use of drinkers only data instead of the alcohol per capita total data is not discussed in the main text, and can only be deduced from the the table caption. For example, due to the use of drinkers only data the country of Iran is currently ranked 9th (Europe's No.1 alcohol consumer Czech Republic is ranked 51st!), even though alcohol consumption is generally prohibited in that country. According to the WHO report (page 229), Iran's alcohol consumption is in fact 1.0 liter of pure alcohol per capita total, but since Iran has few citizens that 'officially' drink alcohol (Non-muslims can get a license/exemption), alcohol consumption per capita drinkers only is a staggering 28.4 liters. Clearly the drinkers only number should NOT be used here! Gazebopro (talk) 15:00, 1 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yup, it was very misleading, so I reverted it to the previous data. 73.109.120.110 (talk) 21:12, 7 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

A general remark about Europe on the map edit

This map is not in accordance with the tables. I checked both the data of the corresponding Wikipedia Article and the WHO document that serves as reference. If the total consumption is shown then most of Europe should be in the 13+ liter/capita category. If only the recorded amounts are indicated then Hungary is below 13, while the Czech Republic and France is above 13. --GaborV (talk) 09:02, 9 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

Myth about Russian vodka edit

I'm wondering why Russian people are often asked in U.S. or Canada if they like to drink vodka. And in many Hollywood movies Russians depicted as drunk. This article shows that in fact Russians drink less then most of Europian nations such as English ,Germans, Spanish etc. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.0.228.58 (talk) 01:24, 29 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Not so much of a myth: I won't let you in a great secret if I say that alcohol sales in Russia are controlled by private companies which are very often closely connected with organized crime. Especially in sectors like alcohol production and retail. Secondly, due to a widely spread tendency of retailers to evade taxes, lion's share of sales in Russia, especially in those controlled by organized crime, are unaccounted and unrecorded. Hence, there is no way for official Russian stats or WHO to draw up realistic numbers. So, don't hold your breath, this number for Russia is far from the reality. The real stats must be even worth. 174.91.99.220 (talk) 21:01, 21 February 2011 (UTC)AndrewReply

Do not confuse total average alcohol consumption with alcoholism, which remains appallingly high among Russian men: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Alcohol_use_disorders_world_map_-_DALY_-_WHO2002.svg —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kenif (talkcontribs) 19:32, 11 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Moldovan, Lithunian and Belarusian men have a higher alcohol consumption than Russian men, so Alcoholism is a big problem in these three countries too but also in countries like Ukraine, Romania, Portugal, Andorra, China and South Korea. And not all Russian citizens in Russia are ethnic Russians, so not all males in Russia are ethnic Russians too so the conclusion is that a high percentage of the male Alcoholics in Russia are non-Russians. And actually there a enough female Alcoholics not only in Russia. The number of female Alcoholics growing currently worldwide. The absolute number of Alcoholics in Russia is maybe the highest worldwide but only due the fact that countries like Moldova have a small number of Inhabitants. In twenty years the country with the highest number of Alcoholics will be China.--141.19.228.15 (talk) 17:14, 23 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

America edit

No way america is 6* more than others

I got some news for all kinds of peops: #6, Saint Pierre and Miquelon, can drink all they want, but they are NOT a country. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.112.210.186 (talk) 05:22, 17 August 2008 (UTC)Reply
How can the US Virgin Islands have ZERO alcohol consumption?? One of the main industries is rum-distilling!

Uganda edit

I'm looking at the linked map - Uganda is colored far too lightly. It's listed as the highest consumer on the planet, but the two darkest countries in Africa on this map are Nigeria and Burundi. Réunion and Swaziland also appear to be too light in color for their rankings. capnvan (talk) 09:47, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'll fix that, thanks for pointing it out. (as for Swaziland, it has two different figures, the map shows the lower one)Sbw01f (talk) 21:27, 12 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Uganda is not currently on the list of countries, although it is very dark on the map. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Kenif (talkcontribs) 19:23, 11 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

New Caledonia, French Polynesia, Réunion… those are no countries (all the one I have listed are part of France's administrative borders). This article is misnamed. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 113.151.4.122 (talk) 03:55, 14 December 2009 (UTC)Reply

Order of countries edit

I was wondering what people thought about ordering by consumption rather than alphabetically. It would make different countries a bit easier to compare IMO. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.193.253.59 (talk) 16:40, 12 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

I briefly wondered too, whether that might be specifically to discourage a competition attitude - I then remembered/realized that the small boxes next to the table headings allow an ordering according to whatever criterion, so relative comparisons are fairly easy. Still I agree, including a line number column would enhance the usability further. Summsumm2 (talk) 15:57, 31 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I just noticed that Poland is out of order ... over 13 liters per year, but it's in with the 9 liter per year group. Is there a reason for this? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 64.111.131.156 (talk) 21:36, 27 April 2011 (UTC)Reply

new data in 2010 edit

Our local newspaper quoted a new statistic from the WHO about alcohol consumption per person by country. And the WHO webpage says (as of now) that they will update their website soon, and that the new information is available in an Excel sheet. Anyone interest in updating this page? -- 78.54.102.74 (talk) 18:17, 9 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

According to http://www.who.int/substance_abuse/publications/alcohol/en/index.html the 2004 report is the most recent. "The Global Status Report on Alcohol 2004 is the second global status report on alcohol published by WHO. The first report was published in 1999." --90.84.146.144 (talk) 10:04, 23 June 2010 (UTC)Reply
Well data for 2005 is available from http://apps.who.int/ghodata/, which is newer than 2003 at least.Grimboy (talk) 01:48, 28 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

illegal alcohol market seem to be absent from data edit

For me, these figures are for sure false: I can tell you than for example polish on average drink way more than french do. I can also tell you that there is a big illegal market (undeclared, home made etc...) for vodka in eastern europe, and very little illegal market for alcohol in France. So I think these figures account only for the legally/taxed alcohol consumption. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.156.204.198 (talk) 13:46, 15 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yeah, I can see a couple of problems as far as the United States data goes. One, it's not legal to drink in the USA until you're 21, so that's six years of data being fudged straight off the bat every time. Two, this is a bit confusing. Many places in the USA only allow beer that's 3.2% ABV, which is horribly weak and, obviously, 96.8% water and other ingredients. This leads to people chugging the stuff like it's water, which it pretty much is. If you're going by total liters consumed, four or five liters of 3.2% beer sure sounds a lot scarier than a couple of pints of something that's 6% to 10% ABV. Plus, four or five liters of "booze" brings in a LOT more tax money than a couple of pints. 69.110.106.4 (talk) 20:28, 10 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Malaysia ranking edit

Malaysia is recently ranked as number 10th in alcohol consumption, but in this page it appears that it has very low consumption.

Sri Lanka Ranking Questionable (Have doubts on accuracy) edit

Sri Lanka is ranked for much higher consumption. This data seems very unreliable. Here is a link from WHO on Sri Lanka. http://www.searo.who.int/en/Section313/Section1524_10876.htm — Preceding unsigned comment added by Boruguru (talkcontribs) 06:22, 2 March 2012 (UTC)Reply

Unreliable data edit

Some of these data are obtained from surveys and are completely unreliable. Countries such as Mexico, USA, or Russia consume much more alcohol than stated here. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 88.27.182.216 (talk) 15:07, 29 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

For Israel, a note should be added that consumption represents 80 % of the population. 20 % of the population are muslim Arabs who do not drink alcohol. For the Jewish Israeli (and the tiny Christian Arab minority)the consumption should be increased by a factor of 0.2

Some (though not all) Muslims do drink alcohol. Some consider it an unfortunate vice they just haven't been able to kick (yet), some drink as an act of rebellion against wider society or their parents, some think Mohammed only meant to ban excessive substance abuse, some just haven't given the matter any thought, some consider drinking a sign of religious immaturity that people grow out of, some drink because of pear pressure, among other reasons. It is known that in Israel, Muslims are less likely to drink, but those who do drink, drink more heavily and more often in secret.

Malt beer edit

It is said that "beer refers to malt beer", but the article Malt beer says: "Malt beer is a beverage made from barley malt syrup, sugar, water, yeast and hops. It is very popular in Israel where it is called "בירה שחורה" ("black beer"). Malt beer has a negligible alcohol content." There seems to be some kind of confusion in the terms, I doubt if only that specific low-alcohol beverage is meant here. --Oop (talk) 11:55, 25 October 2011 (UTC)Reply

Mongolia edit

Something about the Mongolia data seems to be flawed:

a) it's extraordinary high - second leader Czech consumes less than half? b) the table is removing Mongolia from the top when sorting it via the 'total' column. Instead of 1st it only makes a 10+ position.

Can someone verify the data and correct??

Korea flag edit

The flag for South Korea is not displayed. 80.223.182.224 (talk) 10:33, 17 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

2018 Update edit

WHO have released new data: https://apps.who.int/iris/bitstream/handle/10665/274603/9789241565639-eng.pdf update required. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 130.216.215.173 (talk) 00:04, 13 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Drinkers only? edit

I think the list is very misleading when using just the data for drinkers. I was very suprised to see the figures for Tunisia which is exceedingly high when it is a Muslim country. However, it's for drinkers only while the figure per capita is 1,9 according to the United Nations Alcohol Report which is very low on the list. The list should be per capita in relation to the population, therefore, not to the drinkers. --Maxl (talk) 12:03, 2 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

This ranking is completely wrong edit

Just look to any other Wikipedia and tou will see that the results are completely different. I think the causers have been the anonymous users. You should correct this and maybe block the article. Treus72 (talk) 07:39, 6 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

General accuracy, Nepal listed twice? edit

Echoing other Talk notes about accuracy, there are two entries for "Nepal" in the first table "Pure alcohol consumption among persons (age 15+) in litres per capita per year, 2016". Maybe this article needs a close revision? RideABicycle (talk) 19:53, 12 April 2021 (UTC)Reply

Also there is two Belarus on the list. Russian percentages add up to more than 150%.

2016 WHO values are wrong in certain instances edit

E.g. values for Czech Republic are wrong. The split percentages don't add up to 100% and unrecorded consumption is, according to the WHO report, 1.5l instead of 1.4l.

2013 OECD statistics edit

Most of the figures seem to be from 2011 rather than 2013, and some of the ones that don't match up seem to be more recent, but whoever updated the figures forgot to change the year. I also note that all of the countries listed have data available from at least as recent as 2016, so the entire table should probably be updated. And I don't think it's a good idea to list data from different years in the first place, since according to various sources global alcohol consumption fluctuates. So if consumption is roughly the same in two countries, you might still get very different figures if you take data from different years.

I also question the wisdom of having this article at all. I'm not a deletionist by any measure, but this article seems to be a vandalism magnet and it apparently invites vandalism of the most insidious nature: rather than just inserting ‘dicks! dicks! dicks!’ somewhere, which is easily detected, people subtly change the figures.

Values are wrong edit

South Korea's percentages add up to well over 100% and doesn't conform to the source at all. This data needs to be completely re-evaluated.

Flag of Afghanistan edit

On the list of countries, the flag of Afghanistan, the first country on the list, is that of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, which is run by the Taliban, and not that of the internationally-recognized Islamic Republic of Afghanistan. Is this based on a consensus, or was it a computer-based changed that happened when Kabul fell in August of 2021? Personally, I do not think that the flag of the so-called "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan" should be used because it grants legitimacy to an unrecognized, terrorist-group-run state. Add total consumption by country edit

Can we add a new column that adds the total consumption of alcohol by country? By total, I mean total, not by capita. Thank you. 2A02:8108:483F:BE98:8113:6632:CA1A:E789 (talk) 21:29, 31 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
