This sentence: "The southern parts of Judea, if they be measured lengthways, are bounded by a village adjoining to the confines of Arabia;..." is ungrammatical. It's possible that "if they be" is intended as a subjunctive construction, but we don't form it like this. It would be clearer to write simply: "The southern parts of Judea, measured lengthways, are bounded by a village adjoining to the confines of Arabia;..."
