Why are the sections of this article numbered for me? (I don't have the auto-number sections preference enabled, and other pages with similar levels of hierarchy aren't numbered.) A glance at the editing box shows the numbers aren't hard-coded... Doops 16:08, 20 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Gymnastics edit

Best performance in 20 years? edit

The ITV evening news just announced that this was the best British performance for 20 years. I guess this is based on number of gold medals won. If anyone can find a reference for this it would be well worth adding in. - I'll try to find one. --User:Bodnotbod 18:00, Aug 30, 2004 (UTC)

Organisation of events edit

I've just noticed the start of a change in ordering of events, from an alphabetical list of competitors, to division by individual discipline. Whilst this should help organise things, is it particularly necessary to include the times for each heat and round? Name Used for Olympics edit

Would anyone mind this page moving to an appropriate place? 'Great Britain at the 2004 Summer Olympics' is incorrect, no matter which way one looks at it. Thus, both 'United Kingdom...' and 'Great Britain and Northern Ireland...' would be superior. Obviously, this article forms part of quite a large series, and no fewer than three different team names have been used since 1896 (the three being UK of GB&I, GB, GB&NI). The only term that is a correct description of the country throughout is 'United Kingdom...', but that name has never been used as the actual team name. Which one is best? You are right United Kingdom is never used in sporting events, it is either the Four Nations competing independently or together called "Great Britain and Northern Ireland". I don't think there is much point changing this article as you said there are many years where the name has been used incorrectly, The best thing IMO would be to start the next article (2008) as "Great Britain and Northern Ireland at.." or "GBR at..." (GBR is the three letter code for the UK). Another idea would be to call the article "Team GB at..." Team GB is used to describe the team, but mainly at home I think. I would be opposed to using the initialism GBR in the title of the page. "Great Britain and Northern Ireland..." would be the proper, official title and would be the one that I think we should use throughout. "Great Britain" is, from what I can tell, the most commonly used term for the team in international reporting (probably due to the length of 'Great Britain and Northern Ireland'), so while I would prefer the full name, I don't see a big problem with leaving the title as-is and using the full name in the first line of the text whilst explaining the various monikers. -- Jonel | Speak 15:37, 25 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

The name Great Britain (and only that) is accurate. It is used by the IOC and at the Olympics because for Olympic-competition, the British team consists of just England, Scotland and Wales. Athletes from Northern Ireland can and do compete for Ireland at the Olympics (e.g. Swimmer Andrew Bree at the 2000 and 2008 Olympics). Also there is a note in the main Great Britain at the Olympics article as to why this is the case. Hooperswim (talk) 15:29, 10 June 2009 (UTC)Reply
