This is a distribution of FreeBSD. The FreeBSD kernel with some tools that make it act as NAS out of the box.--Grimboy 20:15, 14 February 2007 (UTC)

FreeNAS is a free NAS (Network-Attached Storage) server, supporting: CIFS (samba), FTP, NFS, RSYNC protocols, local user authentication, Software RAID (0,1,5) with a Full WEB configuration interface. FreeNAS takes less than 32MB once installed on Compact Flash, hard drive or USB key. The minimal FreeBSD distribution, Web interface, PHP scripts and documentation are based on M0n0wall.

Minimum Requirements?

The documentation is poor about hardware requirements: 96Meg memory and a dedicated system HD of at least 32 Meg. What about CPU? 286 OK? I have a 800Mhz C7 Processor in a Mini-ITX board. Section needed

Minimum system requirements remains an important point. I'm just in the process of building a NAS device (because my off-the-shelf box is 80% full, and I have about twice that capacity of laptop drives ; just ordering SATA cables in another window), and ended up going to the manufacturer's website to discover that it needs an 8GB minimum of RAM. While the box I've got for the job has 4GB, and my previous (2010-ish) with FreeNAS used a 256MB old system.

At least I now know that this system is off the agenda.

no online capacity expansion

From what I read FreeNAS does not offer the ability to grow the size of the array by swapping in larger disks, but I don't have a proper citation for this. In contrast this is possible to do in Linux distros using mdadm. Shawnc (talk) 18:16, 19 January 2009 (UTC)

NTFS Write Support

It looks like there is NTFS write support as of 0.684b, but I can't be sure from the information on the FreeNAS website due to my technical knowledge gaps. Can someone check and update the page?Gwopy (talk) 14:19, 15 November 2009 (UTC)

Agreed on 8.0 feature set. Currently, the features of 8.0 are significantly fewer than those listed in the article, which presumably is written for the older 0.7.x version. 64.7.157.28 (talk) 17:08, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

Proposed Rewrite

In recognition of the fact that NAS4Free is a legally and technologically separate project from FreeNAS and has re-established an independent Wikipedia page, I propose this rewrite of this FreeNAS page: User:Maiklsdeksters/FreeNAS

Version table

Question Regarding Cleanup

I have observed that a lot of references are used that are mostly directly and some indirectly related to the subject of the page. Doesn't it breach WP:Reliable sources criteria? If so, should I remove all the sources linked to the subject? Thanks. CheezyMom (talk) 01:38, 28 March 2024 (UTC)

It's best not to remove them in most cases. Phrases used in the bad sources can serve as search terms when looking for better ones. Also there might be links to better sources in the bad source. HansVonStuttgart (talk) 07:49, 5 April 2024 (UTC)
