Churches of Christ in Australia - history edit

The Churches of Christ (Australia) is the Australian arm of the Disciples of Christ in the US.

No, it's not... the two groups are similar, and are both part of the Stone-Campbell Conference, but they aren't linked in that way.matturn 03:38, 9 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
We could mention the similarities though. --Just nigel 03:37, 13 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

We could mention the similiarities and differences. In Australia I have never seen robes, choirs or calling pastors "reverend". We have shared a bible college with the Baptist Union for a century. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 139.163.138.12 (talk) 01:12, 16 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

New Structure edit

A major restructring. I have added new headings and arranged the information that was there under the headings as a step towards lefting this article beyond a stub. I changed a bit of the content but don't think I deleated anything (be brave and restore anything you see that has been lost). Now the task is to fill in each of these headings to create a fuller picture of the Churches of Christ in Australia.

Needs adding edit

Since everyone in the US automatically assumes that the Australian Church of Christ 'must' be affiliated with the US non-music-using-fundamentalist 'Church of Christ' somebody should add a diplomatic note that they have nothing whatsoever to do with each other...

They are linked. They're both part of the same international Conference, and share some history. And there are a few "a capella church of Christ" churches (the non-music using group you refer to) in Australia too. matturn 12:41, 18 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
This needs revisiting. Virtually all of the Churches of Christ in the United States are not affiliated with any Conference. The Independent Christian Churches/Churches of Christ do generally participate in the North American Christian Convention, and the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) has a full denominational structure. The sources I've reviewed suggest that there at the Australian Churches of Christ's strongest historical ties have been with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), but some more conservative ones reach out to the Independent Christian Churches/Churches of Christ instead. There are also some capella congregations that associate with U.S. Churches of Christ.
These three restoration movement groups are very distinct in the U.S. While the restoration movement in Australia hasn't fragmented in the same way, when talking about the movement in the U.S., it's important to distinguish between these three groups. EastTN (talk) 21:39, 12 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

History - to add. edit

Here's a link I just found to a history of the Church of Christ in South Australia. It's too many years since I've contributed to the Wikipedia for me to even remember what my log-in was, let alone how to edit an article, but I'm sure there's a whole bunch of relevant stuff in this digitised book if somebody has the time to dig it out. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.242.217.250 (talk) 18:47, 28 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
