Dolly explained the story behind the song in an interview stating: "Male Djs on the radio would not play that song. They hated it. It didn‘t do well with me singing it, because they thought it was against men and not about women. It is really a great man‘s song to sing, but for a woman to sing it. ..When I wrote it, I wrote It for a theme for Steel Magnolias, which they didn't use. But I based It on my relationship with my mother and my Sisters and both my grandmothers. Because it‘s about the strength of women and the stuff that they had gone through, and what we went through together. It was really just about the life of women. It had nothing to do with men. It was about me, like “being a sparrow when she‘s broken, but an eagle when she flies," meaning you're so sensitive, but yet when it's time to fly, when Dolly Parton has to be Dolly Parton. she has to go out there and shine and smile and do positive Interviews and things that people ask. But when I hurt and when l have my personal problems to deal with, they're hard to bear . My burdens are very hard to bear. So it was really about that.
