Merge into Alternative Rock

There's no fucking metal in so called Alternative metal bands... they're all alternative rock for god's sake!!!

Funk metal as a derivative form

Silly 90's kids and your inadvertent inclusion of "Alternative" to genres...

Just so you know, "alternative" has nothing to do with a genre or style. It is simply the alternative to whats popular in the genre of music depending on the era, it was used by radio stations since the 70's to advertise their stations new music of a certain similar genre that was not categorized E.G. your genre of "Grunge" started airplay on Alternative Rock radio stations in the late 80's early 90's because it was THE alternative to the normal rock music of the 80's which was mostly hair bands and late 70's rock...put two and two together tune in a station and you will find that radio media today is dubbing alternative rock something completely different than what it was in the mid early late 80's early 90's mid 90's and so forth.

Analogy follows:

Remember when OxyClean FIRST came out it was in its own class completely separate from a detergent such as tide, and had to order off TV or go to the lawn and garden section because retailers didnt know where to put it...well now its in the detergent section next to the other oxy related detergents...its no longer an "Alternative"

So please sub-categorize a little better than shoving random groups that do not sound what-so-ever similar into an alternative genre.

not a fusion

Because it's a heavy metal subgenre, influenced by alternative rock, although some of the early bands did relate to alternative. BUT, if you listen to System of a down, Nothingface, Drowning Pool, SoiL, Slipknot and stuff who have been alt metal before and sourced alt metal, they sound nothing like alternative rock. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ihy34 (talk • contribs) 03:08, 1 February 2013 (UTC)

Well all those bands you mentioned are what i would categorize as nu metal not alternative metal. They may not have rapping or many industrial elements but they still have that watered down Pantera sound that makes them nu metal. And many current alternative metal bands like Chevelle, 10 Years, Three Days Grace and Breaking Benjamin are all still directly related to and rooted in alternative rock.

Grunge

No. There's definitely some overlap, but the two genres roughly emerged around the same time, so no alternative metal bands were really influenced by grunge. I call the big one bitey 04:01, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

Modern Popularity

This seems to only look at Alternative Metal up until the 90's. In it's modern form it's still one of the most popular rock genres today where it has pretty much filled in both the Hard Rock and Alternative niche. Grunge and hard rock

Many people don't consider grunge a hard rock genre and consider it an alternative rock or punk genre. I put it as simply rock to make a consensus and to prevent edit warring. Hard rock is a subgerne of rock. If grunge is a subgerne of hard rock, then it's a subgenre of rock. Alternative rock and punk both are also rock subgenres. Therefore, if grunge is a subgenre of alternative rock or punk, it's a subgenre of rock.

Influence of Tool overstated

This makes it sound like Tool influenced NIN, when if anything, it would be the other way around seeing as Tool were formed two years after NIN. RATM's debut album also came out a year before Undertow:

Alternative metal and progressive rock

AllMusic says that the first wave of alternative metal bands fused heavy metal music with progressive rock. Should that be addressed in the article?
