New Introduction for the Article

I noticed that this article was in need of a new and revised lead section that better summarized the points in question. I've attempted to summarize it as accurately as possible. It's my first time contributing to Wikipedia so please your comments for how I could further add to what I have done if I have not sufficiently improved it.
