Population? edit

Whats the population of Achill? Is it more or less than Arranmore? Kiand 16:03, 19 Dec 2004 (UTC)

The Deserted Village on Achill Island was actually two villages, Thor and Thor raywach (phonetic spelling, don't know the Gaelic on it) inhabited by the people of what later became Dooagh. The people moved over time to Dooagh beginning around the time of the famine to be closer to the shore for fishing and obtaining seaweed for fertilization of the land. The people continued to graze their cattle in Slivemore, and at that time the old houses were used as boleys, up until the 1950s. My great grandmother, Peggy Moran, was born in Slievemore in 1849, and we often visited the derelict house when we were children as a staging point for our hikes up the mountain. By 1879 she was married and living near the shore in Dooagh. The house on the brae by the main road was built in 1899.

There is some misunderstanding about this. There are local information boards which explain that the "deserted villages" were in fact deserted during the twentieth century, after Irish independence, and not during the potato famine years as is often claimed. This is borne out by the census data (given in the article) which shows that Achill Island's population increased throughout the nineteenth century, peaking before the First World War (under British rule), before declining steeply during the early decades of Irish independence, and then declining still further after Ireland joined the EU. I'm not trying to make a political point here, but it's important to recognise that the facts don't always fit the popular narrative.

Booley edit

The article states that a town was once thought to be a remnant from the Great Famine (I presume the one in the early 14th century.) "However, recent developments suggest that it is a Booley." Is a Booley a thing? It sounds idiomatic, but I can't find a trace of it anywhere. What is a Booley? Other articles make reference to a town of Booley. Is there something characteristic of Booley that typifies a particular kind of town? Also, it would be nice to know which of the Great Famines this comment refers to. Sadly, there have been several in Ireland. Maybe a link to the page that covers the famine in question would help here.

"The 'Deserted Village' at the foot of Slievemore was a Booley village." Now I'm beginning to think that Booley is a people.

Ach! "A booley village is one that is occupied for only part of the year, for instance for the summer months to allow cattle to graze on fresh pasture." So why is it capped in the article, if it's just an adjective? (http://www.achill247.com/pictures/slievemore-7.html)

Biased Article?? edit

There is a big box stating that "the neutrality of this article is disputed" What part of the article is in dispute? - nothing here seems controversial! Could the box provider PLEASE indicate where he/she thinks this bias is? (Sarah777 23:36, 18 February 2007 (UTC))Reply

Why is there no mention of Pastor Nangle?

And Why is there no consultation with local historians and genealogists (Seanchai) there? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 40.140.201.66 (talk) 07:11, 19 June 2018 (UTC)Reply

Sources edit

I know your not supposed to use original research but whoever wrote this article obviously lives here or knows the area well so someone should remove that box about sources Wardhog 19:57, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Umm, sorry, but personal experience is not something we can verify. Any article needs verifiable sources, otherwise any unreferenced information can be deleted at first doubt of its accuracy. I have thus reinstated the tag. Best,—Ëzhiki (Igels Hérissonovich Ïzhakoff-Amursky) • (yo?); 20:52, 5 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Citation requests required edit

The banner seems a bit harsh without the objectors indicating in the body of the article which bits they think need references. That makes it easier to address the objections and concerns. [citation needed] after the sentences in question would do nicely. (Sarah777 01:52, 6 June 2007 (UTC))Reply

The banner was placed by the same user that tagged it neutrality disputed without any further comments. Since nobody has responded to Sarah777s question from february this year about the POV-tag I removed it a few days ago. IMO the unsourced tag could also be removed unless someone can identify which parts of the article require citations. There is also a fairly extensive External links section, which past editors may have regarded as sources. Finnrind 10:08, 6 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
Checked out the editor who added the "facts" tag, he seems to be a heavy-duty chap; I'll try and mark the bits that it's likely he reckons need citations and we'll take it from there. (Sarah777 21:15, 7 July 2007 (UTC))Reply

I'll go about trying to fix this citation needed problem, the article is plagued with them. --Ire2500 (talk) 11:19, 20 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

I noticed that too. Please let me know if I can be of any help. Erikeltic (Talk) 15:13, 20 November 2010 (UTC)Reply

Valley House and history edit

A short description of this house and history (Agnes McDonnell) might be a nice ad for this article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.151.173.36 (talk) 13:37, 27 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Pronunciation edit

The listed pronunciation looks wrong to me. Is it really a hard 'K'?Cooke (talk) 22:45, 26 December 2008 (UTC) Yes hard 'K' sound. My grandmother immigrated from the island and always pronounced it with a hard 'K'sound, the people presently living on the island also pronounce it this way.Reply

There Is a New Bridge edit

The 1949 bridge structure has recently been replaced.

Banner, why have you deleted all reference to the 2019-2020 protest in Achill? Konli17 (talk) 21:12, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Overblown. WP:UNDUE. Beside that, you placed the same info on multiple locations. The Banner talk 21:14, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Multiple is a strange way to describe two. What do you mean by overblown? I don't reckon it's undue, Achill was making national headlines over a protracted period. Perhaps I'm mistaken, but that doesn't seem to happen very often. Konli17 (talk) 21:54, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
It disappeared out of the news quite quickly. At least in my area (midwest). So I can not call it protracted. The Banner talk 22:04, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
It went on for months. You didn't answer my question. Konli17 (talk) 22:15, 25 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
It petered out quite quickly. First mention on RTE was 24 October 2019. The last mention was indeed on 16 January 2020 when the protest was ended. But serious news mention effectively ended in early November, with this mention and this mention: Archbishop warns against those trading in 'hatred and fear'. The Banner talk 00:31, 26 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
You still haven't answered my question. The January report wasn't made after the protest was ended; it predicts the protest would end during the election campaign. Konli17 (talk) 00:52, 26 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
I think you do not want to hear that it petered out after a mere two week. Sorry. The Banner talk 09:50, 26 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
I don't understand. Konli17 (talk) 13:23, 26 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Also, the shorter protest in Oughterard around the same time is covered in that article. Konli17 (talk) 21:20, 26 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
You live in Ireland? The Banner talk 00:09, 27 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
You don't seem to be very focused on the points I've made. What difference does it make where I live? Konli17 (talk) 10:55, 27 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
Konli147 is now blocked as disruptive sockpuppet. The Banner talk 19:21, 2 December 2020 (UTC)Reply
