slashes in name edit

it would be nice to have some explanation of why the name is spelled with two leading slashes. does this indicate a phoneme in the language of origin? ptkfgs 08:59, 17 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

External Link Broken edit

The link given under the "External Links" section ( http://manqala.org/rules/mostra.cgi.en?rules/hus/ ) is broken. I tried to find game rules from the http://manqala.org homepage, but that page is written in Catalan which, regrettably, I can not read. The single English page I could find suggests http://www.wikimanqala.org/ as an alternative, but that site is not responding for me. --TravisM (talk) 07:55, 16 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Following-up to my own post, it seems that http://www.wikimanqala.org/wiki/Hus might be the replacement link, if only the server were responding. --TravisM (talk) 08:03, 16 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Dead link edit

During several automated bot runs the following external link was found to be unavailable. Please check if the link is in fact down and fix or remove it in that case!

ǁHusOwela – The current title, ǁhus, is the Khoekhoe word for the game. Owela is the Ovambo word for the game. The few English language sources that exist (see below) tend to prefer Owela (which isn't surprising since Ovambo is a much more widely spoken language, especially in Namibia where the game is played). Also, ǁhus doesn't make a good title since it doesn't use the Latin alphabet (it begins with a double vertical bar), leading to broken links like the one I found at Omweso. Wikipedia:Article titles strongly discourages titles not written in the Latin alphabet. Nosferattus (talk) 19:37, 27 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Below are the only English language reliable sources I was able to find on the game. Of these, only the first has substantial content.

  • "Owela is played in countries where travelers prefer watching wild game to watching people playing games. It took a simple walk in the wrong direction to find some spectacular Owela games in progress outside the gates of Namibia's world famous gameparks…"[3]
  • "The Yeyi-speaking people call it |wine and the Nama-speaking group in Namibia know the game as ||hus, while in large parts of Namibia, the name is referred to as Owela."[4]
  • "The game known as Owela, which is popular in Namibia, is one of the largest mancala games and often is played with two teams."[5]
  • "Group of people in Namibia playing the mancala game ||hus, also known as Owela."[6]
  • "Figure 1: Owela, a version of Mancala played in Namibia"[7]
