The Sydney Derby[1] is an intra-city local derby in Australia's premier football competition the A-League. It is contested between the two Sydney teams in the competition, Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers FC.

History

The Sydney Derby is a part of Sydney's historic "East vs West" rivalry,[2] of the same dynamic that takes place throughout sport and life in Sydney.[3] The round 3 inaugural Derby match was the most anticipated match of the season.[4] It is considered to be a match that "sells itself" and was expected to be sold out.[5][6]

The Sydney Derby began in the 2012–13 A-League season, with the first meeting between the two clubs in Round 3 on 20 October 2012, hosted by Western Sydney Wanderers at Parramatta Stadium.[7] The attendance for the first ever Sydney Derby was 19,126. The Sydney Derby is one of two A-League intra-city derbies, the other being the Melbourne Derby.[8][9][10][11]

During their inaugural season Western Sydney Wanders went on a run of ten consecutive wins. With two games remaining they had the chance to win the regular season title if they won at home to Sydney on 23rd March 2013, however a hard earned draw put the celebrations on ice.
