Sledgehammer Games is an American video game developer, formed in 2009 by industry veterans Glen Schofield and Michael Condrey, both of whom formerly worked at Visceral Games, and are responsible for the award-winning Dead Space franchise.
History
Sledgehammer Games originally began work on a Call of Duty third-person shooter in 2009, which would reportedly extend the franchise into the action-adventure genre. However, due to the departures of Jason West and Vince Zampella, and 47 other employees from Infinity Ward throughout April and May 2010, Activision halted the production of this new title, and requested Sledgehammer Games to work with Infinity Ward to co-develop Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 instead. Sledgehammer Games had spent six months working on the Call of Duty third-person shooter before they began working with Infinity Ward. As of October 2011, Sledgehammer Games have said that they will likely cancel the third-person shooter, but haven't ruled out the possibility of resuming development in the future. Some rumors claim that Sledgehammer would help develop the ninth Call of Duty game with Treyarch, although it hasn't been confirmed by Sledgehammer CEO Glen Schofield.
Reception
Sledgehammer's first title, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 sold 6.8 million copies in the US and UK alone and grossed $470 million within 24 hours of going on sale but this didn't surpass last year's record set by Call Of Duty Black Ops made by Treyarch games,[1][2] while grossing more than $775 million globally in its first five days of availability.[3]Modern Warfare 3 also topped the UK video game sales chart in its first week.[4] By November 21, 2011, the game remained the bestselling title in the United Kingdom, despite sales dropping by 87%.[5]Modern Warfare 3 held the top spot on the UK charts for a third week and fourth week running.[6][7] The PS3 version of Modern Warfare 3 also topped the Japanese chart in its first week on sale. The PS3 version shifted 180,372 copies, while the Xbox 360 version sold around 30,000.[8]
Along with Raven Software and Infinity Ward, Sledgehammer Games has contributed to the creation Modern Warfare 3 DLC throughout the 9 month season which began on the 24th of January for Xbox 360 ELITE Premium members. Currently, 24 pieces of DLC are expected to be released for Modern Warfare 3.[9]
