Patty Tyler (born Patricia Marie Soto Dumont on September 8, 1983) is an American R&B soul-singer/songwriter, producer, actress and television personality. Born and raised in Miami, Florida, she comes from a very diverse background. Her father Anthony, a contractor, is a Puerto- Rican/Haitian with French descent. Her mother Susan, was Colombian and Irish. Tyler has always expressed her love and respect for her diverse background. She feels she's been able to relate to many different cultures. Proud of her roots and background, she knew she wanted to conquer the world of music and performing arts at a very young age.
Patty Tyler was born in Miami, Florida on September 8, 1983. She began singing at age four and remembers how she became obsessed with music. Growing up, Patty remembers hearing old Motown records that her father would play around the house, usually around night time and Sunday mornings. Patty cites Marvin Gaye, Issac Hayes, Stevie Wonder, Anita Baker and Michael Jackson as major influences in regards to her love and affinity for music, stating "they've molded me into the artist I am today."
She later began performing in school talent shows, and winning upwards 20 local competitions for her vocal abilities. She was known as the girl with "The Golden Voice" in her hometown in South Florida. She joined the drama program in junior high and became a thespian for the next 6 years. During high school, she began dabbling in the music once again. Winning the School's Talent show for 3 years in a row. She was known as "The singer" and was voted "Most likely to get a record deal". She then started auditioning around Miami and found herself recording with various local Miami artists which led to her first proposition for a record deal at 17 with Sony Music in 2000.
She graduated from Miami Coral Park High School in 2001.
Her lucky break came in 2004 when she auditioned for the hit MTV show "Making the Band 3" founded by Sean "Diddy" Combs. Twenty thousand girls from four different states – including big cities such as New York, Miami, Chicago, and Los Angeles – auditioned to get to the top 20, in hopes of making the all-girl group band that later became Danity Kane. She was flown to New York City to audition for Diddy himself at the TRL (Total Request Live) Studio in Times Square. She made the final top 20 cast in the competition, which aired March 2005, and became a favorite on the show along with Aubrey and Andrea among fans and TV viewers over the world. But due to her mother's battle with breast cancer, she was sent home. Unfortunately, a week later her mother died after her return home on December 4, 2004. Patty was then inspired to move to New York city, where she always told her mother she wanted to be and believed she had a chance to really get to the next level in her career.
In 2010 she released her debut single "Next to me ft. Jaafar." Shortly after, she did a feature with Hip hop artist Facethamusic on "My Favorite Song," which made World Star hip hop and aired on MTV, MTV2, Fuse and BET. She's been also featured on CBS Town Sounds Morning Show in Birmingham, Alabama, where she spent some time recording, and working closely with producers Jon "Supreme" Malone and William "Slick" Brown from So Fo Real productions. Tyler also performed and opened for artists such as Keke Wyatt, Urban Mystic, and Eric Roberson, while working on material for her debut LP.
Tyler has also acted in a number of films. She made an appearance as an extra in Bad Boys 2 (2003) and Going the Distance (2010) starring Drew Barrymore and Justin Long. She went on to appear in Circus Maximus (2009) starring Mario Cantone after director Thomas Lasorsa had cast her for her first commercial for Hillside Honda in New York. Tyler has made guest appearances on several films in the previous years, and has done a couple of Indie films like The Phone Call and Besiegement. She's currently wrapped her second major film: Four Corners Road where she plays Cam, a cynical tomboy who hopes to find true love and wishes to be taken seriously by the male friends in her circle.
Artistry and influences
Since making her appearance on the show, Patty is currently focusing all of her time and energy in writing and working on her debut LP, making sure her music encompasses all of her influential sounds and lyrics to enamor her fans who've been awaiting for the debut album. She cites Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill, Amy Winehouse, Alicia Keys, and Adele as her recent musical influences. Patty has always had a love and affinity for music. Her favorite genres include R&B, Soul, Jazz, Reggae, Funk, Bossa Nova, and World Music.
"I'm extremely anxious and excited to show the world who Patty Tyler really is. I truly believe that my music will reflect on who I am as an individual, alongside with real-life situations, obstacles, and everyday challenges I've had to deal with most of my life. Most importantly, I think my ultimate dream is to captivate true stories and turn them into songs that will heal broken hearts, or replenish empty souls that have been drained through emotional or physical abuse. I wish to touch every fan with my music, not limiting myself to any genre while still remaining true to my artistry".
