As of the census of 2000, there were 654 people, 275 households, and 188 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,160.1 people per square mile (450.9/km²). There were 332 housing units at an average density of 588.9/sq mi (228.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.78% White, 0.15% Black or African American, 0.15% Native American, 0.61% from other races, and 0.31% from two or more races. 1.53% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 275 households out of which 30.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.1% were married couples living together, 16.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.6% were non-families. 28.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 2.88.
