NASA Astronaut Group 21

NASA Astronaut Group 21 is a group of 9-15 astronauts to be hired sometime in 2013. NASA announced the creation of this new astronaut group in October, 2011 and began accepting applications for astronaut hires in November, 2011 and closed the process in January 2012.^[1] 6,372, a near record number of applications, were received. The only year NASA has received more applications was in 1978 leading up to the space shuttle program.^[2]

NASA currently projects training for this group of astronauts to commence in August, 2013.^[3]
