      Sarwar Ahmedzai is a citizen of Afghanistan who was a Presidential candidate in 2009, and also a candidate for the upcoming Afghan 2014 Presidential elections.[1][2][3]

      Academic career

      Ahmedzai's family moved to Pakistan in 1979.[1] He acquired education in Pakistan. He was the first Afghan refugee to be sent to the U.S. as a foreign Exchange student and received his high school diploma from a U.S. High School in Virginia. He earned a bachelor's degree in Political Science at Edwards College, Peshawar. He earned a master's degree in International Relations from the University of Peshawar. He received a law degree from the University of Peshawar's Law College. He earned an M.B.A from California State University

      He served as chairman of the Afghan Students Union from 1990 to 1996.[1]

      Sarwar Ahmedzai was elected central chairman of the Afghan Students Union (ASU) in 1990.[1] The body comprised all Afghan studying in different Pakistani colleges and universities. The organization served Afghan students at institutions across Pakistan. According to a profile prepared by the Pajhwok Afghan News, under his leadership, the organization aided thousands of Afghan students with books. According to the profile Ahmedzai led two delegations to Afghanistan, in 1993 and 1994, to try to mediate between the warring factions Burhanuddin Rabbani and Gulbadin Hekmatyar, in the civil war that followed the overthrow of the communist regime in 1992. Rabbani and Hekmatya were then the nominal President and nominal Prime Minister of a fractured Afghanistan.

      Political career

      Ahmedzai served on the first Loya Jirga to follow the overthrow of the Taliban in 2002.[1] According to the Pajhwok Afghan News profile, he served as a coalition builder in the Loya Jirga.

      According to the Pajhwok Afghan News profile he drafted an important "Afghanistan Country Report – 2009".[1]

      Unlike other Afghan Candidates, Sarwar Ahmedzai has refused to work for the Karzai government basing his stance on corruption within the government.

      He is well respected for not taking part in the civil war, and keeping his hands free of corruption and Afghan blood, as well as his high eductaion and charming personality, which makes him popular among the Afghan youth as well as elders.
