Luis Ortiz Monasterio (b. Mexico City, August 23, 1906 – d. Mexico City, February 16, 1990) was a Mexican sculptor. He was founding member of the Academia de Artes in 1968.
Biography
Ortiz-Monasterio studied under Ignacio Asúnsolo at the Academia de San Carlos from 1921 to 1924. After a study trip to California until 1926, he became professor of sculpture at the Academia de San Carlos, and for a second time from 1931 to 1962 in its follow-on institution, the Escuela Nacional de Artes Plásticas (ENAP) of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM). He also lectured at the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN), at the art schools of the Secretaría de Educación Pública (SEP) and at the Escuela Nacional de Maestros.
He worked predominantly with bronze, stone and terra cotta, after the mid-1940s also with colors. Amongst others, his works were exhibited in the Mexican national gallery, and in California.[1][2] In 1967 he was awarded with the National Prize for Arts and Sciences in the category fine arts.
