List of Diary of a Wimpy Kid characters

This is a list of the characters in Jeff Kinney's book series Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and in the film versions of the first,second, and third book. Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a series of graphic novels written by American author and cartoonist Jeff Kinney. The books are the journals of the main character, whose name is Greg Heffley.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a series of films based on the books by Jeff Kinney, who was an executive producer. Like the books, the movies are the journals of Greg Heffley, the series' main character, who is played by Zachary Gordon.

Main characters

Greg Heffley

Main article: Greg Heffley

Greg is the protagonist of the series, who depicts his misfortunes and inner thoughts through illustration. Like many kids his age, he is often selfish and seldom shows any remorse for his wrongdoings. His frustrations generally revolve around his family, friends, and schoolmates respectfully, particularly his best friend, Rowley Jefferson, is pretty much a unpopular loser. On several occasions throughout the course of the series, Greg finds himself in compromising situations that often end with him suffering the most from humiliation, even by the adults in his life, and especially from his older brother Rodrick. Another key problem for Greg is his paranoia, especially after he has performed a wrongdoing of some sort and fears that somebody is going to attempt to seek vengeance or punishment on him for doing this, and sometimes he becomes paranoid over impossible things (such as fearing that his misplaced childhood doll will seek revenge on him for replacing it or that the killer in a horror movie will come for him), and his grasp on reality is not always the strongest. In Cabin Fever, he hung a tag on his parish's giving tree for himself requesting money and once shoveled the pathway to the Church in order to see if someone fulfilled his request, and this good deed was noted in the local newspaper since this enabled a soup kitchen to be opened in spite of the snow. Later, although Greg was not identified by the newspaper, he gave his identity away in a newspaper that he and Rowley attempted to publish themselves in order to receive the glory because of his deed. In rare cases like this, the books, in spite of showing his hardships, do give him some measure of peace through his friendship with Rowley, or a period of seclusion where he resolves to be luckier next time.

Rowley Jefferson

Rowley Jefferson, Greg's best friend, but he is his ex-best friend in The Ugly Truth. He is the second main character of the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series. In Dog Days, they separate, and Greg knows that he and babies bottoms will no longer be friends, but they got back together in the end of The Ugly Truth. He is also the main antagonist in Diary of a Wimpy Kid The Ugly Truth. At the end of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, Rowley eats "The cheese," a secret that only Greg and a small group of teenagers know. Rowley starts to show off in The Ugly Truth because of his pimple in front of all the girls, but Greg is annoyed of his pimple so he writes a fake letter to him from "The Girls" so he'll stop bragging.

Rowley has what Greg considers strange interests for his age and gender, such as liking a singer for "six-year-old girls" named "Joshie", and the DinoBlazer action figures he receives as a birthday present, which is supposed to be toys for kids aged 7. Rowley is also the owner of the comic strip Zoo Wee Mama, which was originally Greg's idea, and they both worked on it. However, Greg gives up to start his own comic strip, and hands Zoo Wee Mama to Rowley, and it becomes a success. After, that however, Rowley claims that Greg had nothing to do with the comic strip. In the seventh book, Rowley begins dating Abigail Brown, a girl from school who was initially supposed to be Greg's date for the Valentine's Day dance.

In the movie series, Rowley is portrayed by Robert Capron.

Susan Heffley

Susan Heffley is Greg's mother. Though she tries to be loving, she sometimes seems dumb, embarrassing and overprotective. She and her husband pay far more attention to Manny than their other two sons, and give their youngest nearly everything he wants. Susan humiliates Rodrick on stage during the school talent show in Rodrick Rules, when she performs an embarrassing dance on stage during Rodrick's band's heavy metal performance. Although Manny caused a lot of trouble in Cabin Fever , she still never seems to scold off Manny. She even lets Manny make imaginary friends thinking he would get traumatized if she told him those.

Frank Heffley

Franklin "Frank" Heffley is Greg's father.He is interested in U.S. history, especially the American Civil War, and he even makes a replica of an American Civil War battle field. Frank is edgy around Rowley, does not appreciate Greg's skill at video games, loathes heavy metal, and strongly detests adolescents. He once threatened to send Greg to the Spag Union Military Academy. In The Last Straw, he tried to toughen Greg up and threatened to send him to military school if he did not "shape up." Frank is also a junk-food addict who sometimes steals Greg's lunch snacks on which Greg depends to make it through the day. However, Greg and Frank grow together in Dog Days after Frank rethinks sending Greg to Spag Union in the end of The Last Straw, but more significantly, over their mutual dislike of the comic strip Li'l Cutie.^{[citation needed]} Frank is portrayed by Steve Zahn in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid (film series).

Manny Heffley

Manuel "Manny" Heffley is the younger brother of Greg and Rodrick Heffley; a ridiculously-pampered, annoying, obnoxious, Spoiled-rotten toddler who is constantly being doted on by his mother. He has a great number of demands and requests, and will throw temper tantrums if these wishes are not fulfilled and he is extremely self-absorbed in spite of his young age. Among Manny's most well-known character hallmarks are his refusal to be toilet-trained and his complete inability of entering a nursery school in which he can remain. Despite his very young age, Manny has shown signs of actually possessing more intelligence than he seems to; he managed to keep the electricity turned off in every room of the house with the exception of his own in "Cabin Fever" and it was in this same book that he successfully managed to change the password to Greg's account on a gaming website. He also has been shown to frequently damage the property of his older brother Greg, as seen in a number of books, and the excessive coddling that he receives from his parents infuriates Greg deeply. In Cabin Fever, it was found that when Manny is scared, he hides in his sock drawer. He also takes advantage of his spoiltness, as he often teases Greg when he gets a new toy that Greg didn't get. He also has red hair unlike his brothers.

Rodrick Heffley

Rodrick is Greg's aggressive older brother. The two have a antagonistic relationship. Mom does everything she learned from teaching Preschool to try to help them get along, which naturally fails. Rodrick is the drummer of his band Lӧded Diper (Greg says it's spelled like that because Rodrick's a bad speller). He is also an expert at loopholes: When he's banned from leaving the house, he just invites the band over and also when Dad makes him get out of bed early during the weekends he simply sleeps on the couch.

Uncle Joe

Frank has a sibling rivalry with Uncle Joe. When Manny started potty training, Uncle Joe insisted that there was a "potty monster" that was about to get him, causing Manny to fear using the bathroom, so that meant Frank had to change his diapers for a longer time. Greg says that he could hear Frank cursing to Joe when he changed more diapers from Manny because of it. Also, Uncle Joe's children call their uncle "Aunt Fwank", which Frank swears he told them to do on purpose, but Susan thinks it's cute. In Dog Days, Greg mentions that he tried to make Uncle Joe convince Frank to get a dog, but that did not work out. He also mentions that his dog, Killer ate most of Greg's birthday cake.

Uncle Charlie

He is Greg's secret weapon at Christmas but usually gets the wrong thing. For example Greg wanted to use a Barbie dollhouse as a fort, but got a Barbie doll instead. Also, when it was brought up at a family meeting that Greg was into superheroes, he got Wonder Woman underwear. Uncle Charlie is a bachelor and spends his spare money well, and Greg says he wants to follow in his footsteps.

Aunt Loretta

Greg's aunt. Not much is known about her. Mainly appearing in Rodrick Rules at the Thanksgiving dinner, she also appeared a couple times in Do It Yourself Book. She looks more elderly than Gramma. She appeared a couple of times in The Ugly Truth.

Terrence

Terrence is Frank's second cousin who has a mustache and glasses. Greg probably thinks he is ugly. It was proved when he was explaining when Terrence was his age, he looked exactly like him, in which Greg says "Terrence looked just like me when he was my age which is actually really depressing.". Greg then mentions he better start saving up for plastic surgery.

Gammie

Greg's great-grandmother and the head of the Heffley family, only appearing in The Ugly Truth, as a minor character . She also has Legos that Susan bought to let her kids do something there. Gammie glued them together because of mess. Gammie is a trickster and knows a lot because of "experience". When someone in the family is about 12 or 13 years old she gives them The Talk, which is about how kids should not be hurrying to grow up. Gammie loves having visitors for dinner. One day Gammie bought a scratch ticket, in which she matched up 2 pictures and told all her family members that she had won a lot of money. Everyone was in a very big rush to get over there. When they all arrived Frank told Gammie that to win you had to match up 3 pictures. When she found that out, she didn't really care. She pulled a roast right out of the oven, and Greg figures she got what she really wanted anyway.

According to the extended Do-It-Yourself Book, Gammie is Susan's grandmother and Gramma's mother-in-law. But she appears to be more likely on Frank's side because whenever there are any "Heffley Family Reunion" Frank's brothers and grandpa also appear there.

Great Aunt Reba

Gammie forgot to give her an invitaion on Christmas, but she came anyway. She made everyone feel guilty. She only appeared in The Ugly Truth.She resembles Aunt Loretta.

Benjy

Benjamin "Benjy" Heffley is Greg's baby cousin who wears a diaper and has a unibrow. His parents are Tony and Patrica. He can read chapter books and can speak full sentences but is not potty trained. He used to say only no and shut up.

Uncle Gary

Greg's uncle who has been married four times. In The Ugly Truth all of his wives divorced him as soon as they found out about his financial situation and job. In The Third Wheel he comes to live with Greg's family after he discovered his job in Boston selling shirts was a ripoff with the shirts having Boston being spelled "Botson". Later in the book it is shown that he got chosen to be the DJ at Greg's Valentine's Day dance.

Reason for divorce: Financial miscommunication (He had $45 in his bank instead of $45,000.)

4th wife: Sonja
Reason for likely divorce: He was only engaged to her by coincidence when a plane with a banner saying "MARRY ME SONJA" flew over the baseball game at which he was going to break up with her because he wanted to start dating her sister. Apparently, there was another Sonja in the baseball stadium. Before Gary could say anything, Sonja turned around and said "YES, YES" When they had the divorce, it was at their wedding when Gary's friend included it in his speech .

Aunt Dorothy

She is Greg's aunt who always kisses him on the lips. Greg's mom, Susan, says it's rude to wipe off the kisses Dorothy gives him. She is overweight and obese, and sometimes passes way too much gas, much to Greg's dismay.

She appears on the "Have You Ever" page in the Do-It-Yourself Book when Greg asks "Have you ever been kissed full on the lips by a relative who's older than seventy?" It means she might be older than 70 years old.

Great Uncle Arthur

He only speaks in grunts or random sounds. He never had an actual conversation with anybody, but sometimes Greg tries to respond to him just in case he is trying to communicate. For example Once when he said "Rrup?" Greg replied "Uh no, Thank you". ' He wears glasses and a neck tie.

Great Uncle Bruce

Great Uncle Bruce appears in Cabin Fever when Greg finds out that he passed away because he spent many years in the same warm blanket that he used for half the winter.

Byron

Frank's cousin in which Greg is not excited to see him, because at Gammie's last meeting, he was sent out to get milk, but hit a pothole halfway home and gets a flat tire, and Greg must get him. He needed supplies, so Greg returned to Gammie's. Due to his muddy shoes, however, the ladies needed to warn him because he was about to track mud. Unfortunately, he forgot about Byron's tire, and he was not happy when he got to Gammie's.

He has only appeared in The Ugly Truth.

Rowley's family

Mr. Jefferson

Mr. Jefferson is Rowley's father, and is far more shrill than Mr. Heffley. Mr. Jefferson is extremely rude and paranoid, not accepting any criticism from anyone if they dare give any type of criticism about him or his property. He is the strictest father in the book series so far. He will not let Rowley play any video games with the slightest bit of violence or fighting in it, as he sees them as things that could change Rowley into a different person. Mr. Jefferson thinks Greg is a "bad influence" on his son. It is also shown that Mr. Jefferson had a close bond with Rowley.

He shows little interest in sports until in Dog Days, where he is found playing tennis with Rowley and golf with a caddy. Greg says in his language: "Your-pa dad-pa smells-pa like-pa a woman-pa!" Greg is then forced to go home, and Greg questions how Rowley's father cracked his code.

In Dog Days, it is revealed that Mr. Jefferson's first name is Robert.

Mrs. Jefferson

Mrs. Jefferson is Rowley's mother. She seems to be often concerned about Rowley such as when he broke his big toe after Greg put one of his dad's dumbbells under a pillow that Rowley kept kicking at Greg's sleepover. She also had Greg apologize to her for what he did to her son. Despite this, Mrs. Jefferson always enjoys Greg's company with Rowley. Although Mrs. Jefferson loves Greg, she does not let him come over because her husband hates Greg.

In the first film, Rowley's mother is portrayed by Kaye Capron, Robert Capron's real life mother, whereas in Dog Days she is portrayed by Bronwen Smith.

Rowley's grandfather

Rowley's grandfather only appears in Rodrick Rules, when it's his birthday and he asks for a chocolate cake for his next birthday and Greg replies "If you're even alive next year", thus stating he is really old.

In the Rodrick Rules movie, Greg's grandfather has this role instead.

Other

Heather Hills

Heather Hills is Holly Hills' older sister who appeared in Rodrick Rules and Dog Days. She is in Rodrick’s grade, whom Greg has a crush on. She is also alphabetically put after him. She was once Rowley's baby-sitter until Rowley's parents switched her with Leland. Apparently, she is in the same grade as Rodrick, with her yearbook picture being next to his in their sophomore year. Rodrick always tries to make it to Rowley's house with Greg before storytime when Heather babysits. Rodrick is surprised when Rowley's parents replaced her with Leland. In Dog Days, she works as a lifeguard at the country club, and in the film Rodrick tries to get her to save him from drowning but some other man sees what is going on, saves him and gives him the kiss of life while Heather is talking not very nicly to a little girl. This sends Rodrick in tears, partly because his FAKE tattoo is ruined. This makes Greg very embarrassed because his best friend Rowley Jefferson and Crush Holly Hills are there as well . He says that "besides, those long-distance relationships never work anyway”.

In the third film, Heather is one of the main antagonists and protayed as a love interest for Rodrick, who throughout the movie attempts to get her romantic attention, even going as far as to do a rock cover of Justin Bieber's "Baby". She is portrayed as a spoiled and rude girls, and Greg describes her as "Rodrick in a dress". At the end of the movie, her sweet sixteen is ruined.

It is possible Heather Hills was based on Heather Mills, former Beatle Paul McCartney's ex-wife. The Heather Hills character in the movie is also a slight reference to the Carnotaurus from Disney's Dinosaur and she is 20 years old in real life.

The Snellas

The Snellas are a family that lives in the Heffleys' neighborhood, and they have a lot of children, all of whom are male and have names beginning with the letter S. Five of the children's names are revealed, and they are (from oldest to youngest): Shawn, Shane, Sam, Scott, and Seth. In The Last Straw, it is revealed that each Snella child has a half birthday party in which the adults perform funny stunts, in which no baby has laughed once, according to Greg.

Mr. Snella then sends the videos to "America's Funniest Families", a spoof and parody of America's Funniest Home Videos, and has never won anything (though due to Greg's embarrassing moment at the end of The Last Straw, they may have finally won).

It was explained in The Ugly Truth that they moved away at some point because at one of their kids' half-birthday parties, Greg was going to eat some deviled eggs at the party. But because of how revolting they were, Greg tossed them into one of the ' plastic plants. Over time, the smell started to really annoy the Snella's, and since they could not trace it, they moved out. When they were moving out, Greg admitted that he felt guilty after seeing them take the plastic plant, meaning they will probably move out again once they smell the eggs.In Cabin Fever,Mr Alexander moves into their house.

Scotty Douglas

Scotty is a first grader from Rowley's karate class.In Rodrick Rules, Scotty was going to do a magic act in the Talent Show with Rowley as his assistant, but after Greg breaks Rowley's big toe, Greg has to fill in for Rowley. Greg complains about being a magician's assistant to Scotty, but Greg's mother tells Scotty's mother that Greg would be happy to replace Rowley. In the tryouts, Greg messes up the act so badly they are the only one not to make the auditions.

Scotty has a remarkably similar appearance to Greg's comic character, Creighton The Cretin, except Creighton's eyes are wide open and Scotty's eyes are beady just like all the other characters that do not wear glasses. In The Ugly Truth, he becomes the new Peachy Breeze kid, yet cannot say the slogan right. Between "Rodrick Rules" and "The Ugly Truth" it appears that Scotty has 2 siblings: An unnamed baby sister and an older brother(who is supposed to be ugly). In The Third Wheel Greg looked through the window at his house to find him playing one of Greg's video games with Rowley.

Benny Wells

A huge kid in Greg's wrestling class who is illustrated to have a big nose, beady eyes and can bench press 250 pounds. Greg says that he is afraid of wrestling Benny, which might refer to his writing about getting twisted into a pretzel for the whole wrestling unit.

Mr. Litch

Mr. Litch is Greg's very tough soccer coach. He was the reason Rodrick never does sports anymore, because of his strict disciplinarian attitude. Greg gets in trouble with Mr. Litch many times since he is lazy and rude. Greg and several others once were going to run at him with their butts sticking out (since Mr. Litch usually told them to "get your butts over here!"), but Greg was the only one to do so, with the others hanging him out to dry. Another time, with Greg in the front and two other kids in the back, one of them honked the car at Mr. Litch and made it look like Greg did it. According to Greg, he is a type of drill sergeant who likes to yell at people a lot. In the film series, he is replaced by Coach Malone.

Bill Walters

A 35-year old high school drop out and professional singer who has a rude attitude and Rodrick wants to be like him. In the novel Rodrick Rules, he was voted "Most Likely to Be a Rock Star" which influenced Rodrick to persuade him to join the band. Frank Heffley strongly dislikes Bill because he disapproves of his lifestyle and is afraid Rodrick will follow in his footsteps. In the live-action movie version of Rodrick Rules he is portrayed by Fran Kranz and is the main antagonist as he agrees to join Rodrick's rock band Loded Diper and later attempts to kick him out for an unknown reason. After performing the song "Exploded Diper", Rodrick retaliates and kicks him out. In the book Greg describes him as unemployed and still lives with his parents even though he is 35 years old. Also, in Rodrick Rules Bill appears to be a slob, as he "slorks" pot roast.

Leland

Leland is Rowley's current babysitter, also living next door to him, as said in Rodrick Rules. However, in the Do-it-Yourself Book, the map of Greg's neighborhood shows that Leland lives on the street that Holly Hills lives on. (Another conflict is that it is said in The Last Straw that Holly lives on Pleasant Street. If Leland lived next to Rowley, he would be living on Surrey Street, because that is the street Rowley is said to live on in the first book.) Leland only appears in Rodrick Rules, when he teaches Greg and Rowley how to play "Magick and Monsters", which is a game based on several real-life games including Dungeons & Dragons. Rodrick later tells Greg that Leland is the "biggest nerd in his school". In the "Winter Talent Show", Leland does a ventriloquist act and wins the grand prize, over Rodrick's band performance, causing Greg to agree that Leland may be a huge nerd. In the Rodrick Rules DVD he appears in the extra 'My Magik Summer.'

Dr. Salazar Kagan

Only appearing in The Ugly Truth, he is Greg's hygienist, and is also Frank's. He does not like Greg drinking soda. Greg bit his finger which made him tell Frank he needed headgear and had to wear it all day. Greg says Dr. Kagan is scary and he is not fooling around. He has sharp metal tools and never smiles.

Lenwood Heath

Lenwood Heath is a rebellious teenager in The Last Straw and was Frank's archenemy for about three months before he was shipped to military academy. Frank met him two months later as a reformed citizen and acted as if he was an old friend. In the book, he works as an usher for the movie theater in Greg's neighborhood. However, in the film Dog Days, he works at the local pool as a lifeguard.

Jordan Jury

Jordan Jury is a popular boy in the grade above Greg who only appears in The Ugly Truth and always has blowout parties. At one point, he invited Greg and Rowley to one of his parties, but Greg could not go because of his Uncle Gary's 4th wedding. The real reason he invited the kids in Greg's grade is to use them as servants, so Greg is somewhat glad he didn't go when he finds this out.

Nasty Pants

Nasty Pants is a 5-year old that once bullied Greg and Rowley by chasing them with a stick. So far he has only been in Cabin Fever.

George Fleer

George Fleer is 1 of the young boy characters that appeared in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Ugly Truth and has a serious outie for his bellybutton, and he likes chasing other people around with it like a maniac.

Angie Steadman

Angie was not an actual character in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books, but is an additional character in the first film as a photographer for the school newspaper. It was initially believed that she was based on Holly Hills, until it was confirmed otherwise, though Holly did appear in the second movie. She is shown to dislike middle school calling it an intellectual wasteland. Greg first meets her under the benches of the playground surviving the game gladiator. She often gives Greg advice throughout the movie. At the end she was one of two students not afraid of Greg after he got the cheese touch (the other being Rowley). For unknown reasons, she was not in the first film's two sequels, although it may have been because of Chloë Grace Moretz schedule conflicts. An in-universe explanation could be that Angie graduated.

Pete Hosey

The leader of the teenagers that attacked Greg and Rowley on Halloween. He is the main antagonist in the first film. He is unnamed in the first book but he is replaced by Herbie Reamer in the online version. After hasseling Greg and Rowley on Halloween, Greg yells that he will call the cops, and they chase him to Greg's grandmothers house. In the book, Greg and Rowley sneak back home, but in the movie, they try to intimadate Pete and his friends with a weed hacker, before he scratches his car and are chased into the woods. In both the book and the movie, the teens held a vendetta against them and near the end they corner them on the school field, and decide to force them to eat the moldy cheese. Rowley is forced to eat the cheese, but Greg ends up avoiding so by saying he's lactose intolerant, but in the movie they are chased off by the coach.

Peter Uteger

Another student in Greg's class, who used to break the rule that students whose last names start with the first letters of the alphabet were smart, but his standing was ruined when the others started to say his initials out loud ("P.U.!"), a joke that Greg started.

The Warrens

Although his family is vaugely referenced in the books, the Warren's are what got Frank thinking of making Greg more manly. The children of the Warrens are shown to be athletic and sporty, in stark contrast to Greg. In the third film, Stan, the father of the family, is one of the main antagonists, and is shown to be a neighbor of the Heffley's and has a childhood rivalry with Frank, that they appeared to have gotten over as adults. Greg finds out that Stan has been making fun of his father behind his back and came up with an elaborate prank to get back at him.

The Mad Pantser

The Mad Pantser is the nickname of the pantser in Greg's school. It is unknown who The Mad Pantser is, but a clue is given as four boys in Greg's school are affected by chicken pox, and no pantsing incidents happened after they got sick. The Mad Pantser was involved in several incidents and pantsed even Vice Principal Roy. In the Valetine Day Dance, he pantsed Rowley. He appears only in Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Third Wheel.
