Lillian Glass

Lillian Glass is an American interpersonal communication and body language expert, media commentator, a litigation consultant, and author of self-help books. She is also an award winning[1] film director and producer.

Lillian Glass was born and raised in Miami, Florida and is the daughter of businessman Abraham Glass and Rosalee Glass (née Talerman)[2] actress and star of the award-winning documentary film Reinventing Roslaee[3] who was honored at the White House for her achievements.

Graduated from Coral Gables Senior High School[4] and was inducted into the Coral Gables Senior High School Hall of Fame in 2023.[citation needed]

Glass received a Bachelor of Science degree from Bradley University[5] in Speech and Hearing Sciences, where she was named one of Glamour Magazine's Top 10 College Women.[citation needed] She earned her Master of Science degree from the University of Michigan, where she became interested in gender differences in communication and the study of cranial and dental- facial abnormalities.[6]

She received a doctorate degree from the University of Minnesota and was awarded a Bush Foundation fellowship. She majored in communication disorders, with an emphasis on speech and hearing sciences, and minored in clinical genetics. Her doctoral dissertation focused on "Psychosocial Perceptions of Speech and Cosmetic Appearance of Patients with Craniofacial Abnormalities".[7]

She received a post-doctorate in Medical Genetics at UCLA School of Medicine, where she received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Grant and did research on speech and hearing problems of patients with a variety of genetic diseases, including those with neurological and skeletal problems. Glass has published in various professional journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine .[8] She also discovered a genetic syndrome involving deafness and a dental abnormality, described as the Glass-Gorlin Syndrome (oligodontia and sensorineural deafness).[9][10]

In 2013, Glass attended Pepperdine University's School of Law Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution, where she studied "Mediation".[11] In 2016, Glass completed her training in "Divorce & Family Mediation" at the Straus Institute for Dispute Resolution.

Upon completing her postdoctoral training at UCLA School of Medicine, Glass became an associate professor at the University of Southern California (USC). She held joint appointments with the School of Medicine,[12] Department of Medical Genetics, School of Dentistry, and Department of Speech Communication and was a researcher at the University of Southern California Speech Research Lab.[13] Glass has published numerous publications in various medical & scientific journals as well.[14][15][16]

Private practice edit

Glass began her private practice in Beverly Hills, California, treating patients with speech and hearing difficulties. Her practice progressed to training actors for movie roles. One of her first clients included Dustin Hoffman whom she taught to sound like a woman for Tootsie.[17] Glass also worked with Sean Connery[18] and Dolly Parton.[19] She taught Micky Rourke how to sound like a person with a speech disorder for Johnny Handsome[20] and trained Rob Lowe on various films including Bad Influence[21] as well as Dolph Lundgren.[22][23] She coached deaf actress Marlee Matlin, in speaking publicly for the very first time at the Academy Award ceremonies and in film roles,[24] and Rob Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan[25] of Milli Vanilli. She also worked with Fran Dresser(The Nanny) to help her modify her New York accent.[26] Caitlyn Jenner also worked with Glass to learn how to feminize her voice and body language as she transitioned from being Bruce Jenner.[27] Glass also worked with singer Julio Iglesias[2] and actor Andy Garcia.[2]

Glass has also lectured on the topic of communication and body language throughout the world.[28]

Glass began her television career as a co-host on Alive and Well on USA Network[citation needed] and as a psychology reporter for the ABC affiliate in Los Angeles, KABC Television.[29] She has since appeared as a commentator on a variety of news and talk shows, including Good Morning America[30] and the Today show.[31][32] In addition, she has often appeared on various news shows discussing the body language and communication patterns of newsmakers. She has appeared as a body language expert on CNN,[33] HLN,[34] MSNBC,[35][36] Fox News,[37] Entertainment Tonight,[38][39] Inside Edition,[40] Extra TV,[41] News Nation,[42] 20/20[43] and others.[44][45] Finally, she has appeared on numerous reality shows,[46][47] and was the body language expert on Season 8 of Dancing With the Stars,[48] BRAVO's Millionaire Matchmaker,[49] and Busted and Disgusted.[50] She has also appeared on National Geographic's Brain Games and on Dr. Phil.[51][52]

Glass has written a monthly body language column for Cosmopolitan Magazine.[53] She has appeared in numerous magazines, newspapers and online publications worldwide including Newsweek, Time Magazine[54], Wall Street Journal, Business Insider[55] and Yahoo![55]

Along with her "Dr. Lillian Glass Body Language Blog",[56] Glass also writes about celebrities and newsmakers in her blog, Reading People, for Psychology Today.[57] She has also been a contributor to Women in Crime Ink.[58]

Legal Consultant edit

Glass has provided expert testimony regarding body language, speech, and vocal forensics and behavioral analysis for numerous high profile legal cases. Her body language and behavioral analyses have been instrumental in allowing the settlement of many legal cases in which she consulted, such as ESPN's Michael Irvin's sexual harassment case.[59] She has been retained by attorneys not only as an expert witness, but also to help with jury selection and witness preparation. Glass has been a member of the American Society of Trial Consultants and a member of the Pro Bono Committee of the ASTC which provides free jury and trial consulting for pro bono groups.

Film career edit

Glass began a film career in 2017 as a director and producer.

Her first film is the documentary Reinventing Rosalee[3] which has won 57 awards worldwide.[3] The film is about her mother, Rosalee Glass, a Holocaust survivor who did remarkable things in her late senior years such as becoming an actress, writing a book, and riding with Alaskan sled dogs at the age of 100.

Her next film is a documentary titled De-Escalation[60] which presents 7 major high profile cases of police brutality and what could have been done differently. The film provides the solution to excessive use of force by law enforcement.

Her third film, a documentary called Feisty Fighter- The Marnezba Tackett Story,[61] is narrated by broadway actor Ben Vareen. The film has won numerous film awards across the United States.[61]

Her most recent film is Hey Beautiful[62], an inspiring documentary & love story about a woman with a facial deformity who never thought she would find love, only to celebrate her 32nd wedding anniversary. The film has also received numerous film awards.[62]

Glass was inducted into the Coral Gables Senior High School Hall of Fame in 2023.[citation needed]

She was selected as "Outstanding Young Graduate" by Bradley University and inducted into membership into their highest alumni honor society, "The Centurion Society".[5]

Glass was not only honored by Glamour Magazine as one of the "10 Top College Women"[citation needed] but years later was honored as one of the 10 "Outstanding Young Working Women." She was also chosen as one of the nation's "9 Successful Business Women.[6]"

In her film career, Glass has won numerous film awards for "Best Director"[1] and "Best Female Director"[1] for her film Reinventing Rosalee.[3] She has also won the award of "Best Documentary" for her films Reinventing Rosalee,[3] Hey Beautiful,[1] and Feisty Fighter-The Marnesba Tackett Story[61] in various film festivals throughout the world.

Noise Pollution Awareness Advocacy edit

As a USC professor, Glass helped create public awareness via a media campaign, to warn the public against the dangers of noise pollution.[12] Glass, along with a group of celebrities, also advocated the building of acoustical noise barriers to help mitigate noise pollution in Los Angeles. She was also on the Board of Directors of a consumer advocacy group established by the American Speech-Language and Hearing Association to help create awareness with regard to noise pollution.

Copyright Infringement of Glass's Toxic People Book edit

In 2010, Glass won a jury verdict in US Federal Court for copyright infringement against Marsha Petrie Sue for having published in 2007 a book entitled Toxic People. Glass had written a book by that same title in 1995, and the 2007 book by Petrie Sue contained word-for-word copying of Glass' work.[63]
