The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (Hindi: भारतीय प्रबंधन संस्थान अहमदाबाद), better known as IIM Ahmedabad or simply IIM-A, is a business school located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. It is the second Indian Institute of Management (IIM) to be established, after IIM Calcutta, in 1961.[1]

History

IIM-A was the second IIM to be set up, on December 16, 1961.[1] Noted scientist Vikram Sarabhai, prominent management educator Ravi J. Matthai and several other Ahmedabad-based industrialists played a major role in its creation.[2] It also had collaboration with Harvard Business School during its initial period.[3]

IIM-A is the only Indian institute listed by The Economist in its 2011 Full time B-school ranking, at #78.[7] In the Financial Times Global B-School Rankings, IIM Ahmedabad's PGPX programme was ranked #11 in 2012.[6] In the QS Global 200 Business Schools Report it was ranked #2 in the Asia-Pacific region for 2012[8] In India, it was ranked first by the Hindustan Times India's top 50 business schools of 2011[10] and by the 2012 edition of CNBC-TV18's Top B-Schools in India[11] and ranked #3 by the Business Today 50 best business schools of 2011.[9] The Post Graduate Program in Agribusiness Management was ranked first (globally) by Eduniversal, in the field of "Agribusiness / Food Industry Management".[12]

Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship

The Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship was setup in the institute with support from the Government of Gujarat and Department of Science and Technology to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in India.[13][14]

Campus

The IIM is spread over lush greenery in Vastrapur and was designed by the American architect Louis Kahn.It has two campuses, the "Heritage Campus" and the "New Campus", joined by an underground gallery. Together, they cover more than 100 acres (40 ha).[15] The new campus has two major sections: One section caters to the needs of PGPX, PGP, PGP-ABM and FPM courses, the other section is referred to as International Management Development Centre.

Events

Student events include Confluence, an annual business summit organized in the month of November,[54] and ConneXion, an annual event organized by the alumni cell to drive industry interaction with academia.[55] Other events include Chaos, an annual culfest, Sangharsh, an inter-IIM sports tournament and Insight, a market research event.[56][57][58] It's Finance & Investments Club, BETA organizes a financial services focused event titled 'Exchequer' which in its 2011 edition saw Nilesh Shah, President of Corporate Banking at Axis Bank speaking with the students. It is also responsible for IIM Ahmedabad's annual flagship publication, 'The Efficient Frontier'.[59][60][61]
