This is wrong. The NVA rank of Generalmajor corresponded to WW2 and prior German usage, making it the equivalent of a NATO one-star OF-6 or Brigadier/Brigadier General, NOT a two-star OF-7 or Major General.

The post-1945 West German (and now united German) Bundeswehr omits the "generaloberst" rank, bumping up the two ranks below it by one rank each and inserting the rank of "brigade-general" at the bottom, making it match the US Army and other Western armies.

See this table:

Rank comparisons
NATO OF Equivalent NATO Stars Wehrmacht/NVA Rank Bundeswehr Rank US Rank
OF-9 4-star Armeegeneral General General
OF-8 3-star Generaloberst Generalleutnant Lieutenant General
OF-7 2-star Generalleutnant Generalmajor Major General
OF-6 1-star Generalmajor Brigade-general Brigadier General
