it should be noted that "varangian settlements" were actually slavic and finno-ugric settlements under a varangian military caste. Slavs were obviously already as far north as novgorod by this time. Errors in the map edit
Aldeigja and Alaborg were not "slavic" but in the territory of finnic tribes, as their names comes from balto-finnic languages (Aldeigja = Alajoki =Low River fex). Karelians lived much more south, around lake Ladoga (or lake Neva like it was called back then). The Ves' (wrongly written as Vespians in the map) lived around Valgetjärvi (Beloozero) region and west form it. Their modern day names is Veps not Vespian. Chudes lived in Novgorod (Holmgard) region not in Karelian Isthmus, which was the original "Island of the Rus'".
- Livonians didn't live in Estonia, they lived in northern Latvia on the shore. So, Estonians should be added to this map as well..H2ppyme (talk) 09:09, 8 March 2009 (UTC)
