Summary

Description
English: Victorian Railways 5'3" gauge 1,500 V dc overhead 'Harris' emu (2nd Series) No.795M driving motor at the Victoria Railway Museum, North Williamstown, 2 April 2016. The Harris stock was built by the Gloucester Railway Carriage & Wagon Co, 1956-59 (30 1st Srs 3-car sets), Martin & King (30 2nd Srs 3-car sets) in 1961-67 and VR Newport 1968-70 (10 cars). They were known as the 'Blue Trains' because of their new livery and they were the first steel emu's in Melbourne. The 10 Newport-built cars were used to strengthen 10 units to 4-car sets. They then operated as 7-car sets were built composed of 3 and 4-car sets coupled together except for off-peak workings when the 4-car sets worked on their own: 30 1st Srs, 30 2nd Srs. 4 sets were reconditioned in 1981-82 with a new livery for the Sandringham line before the programme was abandoned. The 'Harris' sets were withdrawn in 1994. 6 sets to a modified, longer design were built by VR Newport in 1970-71 which acted as prototypes for the 'Hitachi' sets.
