Summary

Description
English: This is a wooden case that originally held two tin-plate drums of 4 imperial gallons or 5 US gallons each. This form of packaging was used for what was known as 'case oil' and used for the seabourne trade in refined petroleum products, using ordinary cargo ships, until this practice was superseded by bulk tankers in the first few decades of the 20th-Century. There were a number of shipping disasters caused by drums leaking in the holds of cargo ships and the vapours subsequently igniting. This wooden case was on display in the window of Barnesstore Emporium and Cafe in Albury St, Murrumburrah, NSW, Australia, and was photographed with the permission of the cafe staff.
