Les Espagnols entreprirent la construction de cette forteresse en 1585. L'ingénieur militaire italien Battista Antonelli (1547–1616) fut chargé de la conception des fortifications. À l'origine, la structure fut conçue comme un petit fort entouré de douves sèches, mais il fut agrandi et reconstruit à plusieurs reprises et devint une forteresse majeure d'une grande importance stratégique pour l'île. La carte est orientée avec le nord à gauche et son angle d'inclinaison est aigu. The fortress was built by the Spaniards, starting in 1585. The Italian military engineer Battista Antonelli (1547–1616) was commissioned to design the fortifications. The structure originally was conceived as a small fort surrounded by a dry moat, but it was expanded and rebuilt on several occasions and became a major fortress of great strategic importance for the island. The map is oriented with north to the left and tilted up at an acute angle. On the right side are the title and an “Explanation” that indicates, through a numeric code, the fort’s bastions, bridges, cisterns, and batteries, with brief descriptions of some of these features. The map is drawn in pen on paper, with scale drawings in black ink and background in gray, pink, green, and orange sepia.

Originalmente, a estrutura foi concebida como um pequeno forte cercado por vala seca, mas foi expandida e reconstruída em várias ocasiões e se tornou a principal fortaleza de maior importância estratégica para a ilha. O mapa está orientado com o norte para a esquerda e inclinado em um ângulo agudo. No lado direito estão o título e uma “Explicação” que indica, por um código numérico, os baluartes, as pontes, as cisternas e as baterias do forte, com breves descrições de algumas dessas características. O mapa está desenhado em caneta sobre papel, com os desenhos das escalas em preto e o fundo em cinza, rosa, verde e sépia alaranjado.
