Description Aerial view of the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Turner (DD-648) after an internal explosion on board the ship off Sandy Hook, New Jersey (USA), on 3 January 1944. The first helicopter medical mercy mission in naval aviation history occurred when Commander Frank Erickson delivered blood plasma for survivors of the accident using a U.S. Coast Guard Sikorsky HNS-1 Hoverfly.
