It significantly aids the reader's understanding of the article by providing a photograph of the article's subject. The subject in question is no longer alive so it is not possible to produce new (free) photographs of him. The image itself is of significance, rather than the event it depicts, because there has been some debate over Timothy Evans's expression captured in the photograph. Kennedy (Ten Rillington Place) suggests Evans looked haggard and exhausted when he was taken to Notting Hill police, while Justice Brabin (Rillington Place (The Stationery Office, 1999), p. 68) argues it is only showing Evans being taken by surprise by a camera flash. |
