A newspaper report of 1829 records how his death sparked wild scenes of celebration amongst the local population. For example "In the public houses the general feeling was exhibited without restraint" is written. The paper then goes on to state that it was reported that in the week that he died "810 people in the borough were in the most wretched and desperate condition."
