Summary

Description
English: Stumpy Tower - Girvan Stumpy Tower is a Grade B listed building and was purpose built as the Town Jail in 1827. Stumpy replaced the former jail sited on the south west corner of the market place. The old jail built in 1789 was a two storey building with a thatched roof through which prisoners frequently made their escape. This first jail was also known as Stumpy.

The town council minutes record that the proposals for a new jail with steeple were approved in 1825. A certificate for the new jail was issued in 1827, the substitute Sheriff being satisfied that Stumpy was well aired and fit for prisoners.

Stumpy contained a clock tower beneath which the first and second and third floors were built as prison cells each with a latrine in the south west corner. Ten years after completion the jails inspectorate noted that a marked improvement in the peace of the town is said to have followed following the construction of the prison. Stumpy was used as a jail from 1827 until the 1870s when a new jail and police station were constructed.
