Summary

Description
English: John 'Jacky' Owen was an aboriginal man and prospector who discovered copper at Shuttleton, N,S.W, in late 1900. He was either employed or working with Thomas Shuttle, after whom Shuttleton is named and who may have been the co-discoverer of the copper. Owen had discovered a quartz reef containing gold at Gilgunnia in April 1895. He is of interest as an aboriginal man who was involved in prospecting and mining in the late 19th-century and early 20th-century. The original caption of this photograph in the newspaper article (see below) reads "Jackey Owens, The Discoverer of the Shuttleton Copper Fields, near Nymagee".
