The water of Crater Lake is almost a mile deep and it is very pure. Because of its depth, sunlight striking the water loses all its color as it goes deeper leaving only the cobalt blue. If you find a spot like this along the show you can see the principle at work. The water starts out clear, then goes through several shades of blue as the depth increases.
