Summary

Description
English:
The building as it appeared from 1929 to 1949.

Cannery Building / Old Cannery Building, 213 S. Main St. in the Pioneer Square neighborhood, Seattle Washington. Also known as Cascade Laundry / Sportcraft Knitting Company / Cannery Workers ILWU Local 37 Union Building / Longshore Union Hall / The Old Cannery Workers ILWU Local 37 Union Building.

On June 1, 1981, Silme Domingo and Gene Viernes of ILWU Local 37, both of whom were trying to reform the conditions for cannery workers in the Alaska fishing operations, and both of whom had actively opposed President Ferdinand Marcos of the Philippines, were gunned down there.

The building dates from 1900, but the angled façade only dates from 1928–29, when Second Avenue Extension cut through the neighborhood. You see at left a remnant of when the Cannery Building had two more floors, lost after the 1949 Earthquake. For more about the building, see Summary for 213 S Main ST S / Parcel ID 5247800880, Seattle Department of Neighborhoods.
