Summary

Description
English: Scott family pedigree with coats of arms illuminated on vellum, nearly 2000 x 750 mm, commissioned probably by Sir John Scott (1570-1616) of Scot's Hall and Nettlestead Place, in Kent, MP, whose arms appear on the bottom row, two shields, each impaling the arms of one of his two wives, whose individual mural monuments with heraldry and kneeling effigies, survive in Nettlestead Church. His arms also appear in the larger two shields below the pedigree: the left-hand one showing his quartered paternal arms, the right-hand one impaling Smythe, with quarterings, for his second wife Katherine Smythe. He was a very wealthy man who spent his money freely, thus likely to have been produced by the leading heraldic artist/genealogist of his time. The pedigree starts at the top with four columns, representing families of (left to right) Scott, Pympe, Pashley and Woodville. It shows his family's connection to Elizabeth Woodville (c.1437-1492), wife of King Edward IV. His great-grand-father married a Pympe, whose mother was a Pashley, whose paternal grandmother was a Woodville, an aunt of Elizabeth Woodville, as the pedigree shows. Sold at Bonhams Auctioneers, London, 26 Jun 2007, Lot 46 "HERALDRY - SCOTT FAMILY OF KENT", for £3,840.
